Earlier I was on Twitter, and I saw on Michael Ausiello's page
this article about the Top 10 TV Dads, and I didn't exactly agreed with it.
I though: there surely must be better dads than these guys, and I started to think about it... I was quite surprised when I saw how easy it was to write down names of good TV dads, because usually TV shows concentrate on one generation at the time, and at first I thought I would have found dads just on Teen Drama shows, where families have an auxiliary role, but I was wrong.
I started with one big list but then I changed my mind and I did something different.
BEST TV DADS:
Apparently I really like single dads, especially when they're dealing with daughters so, in order to have different shows and different relationship I chose this to be my top 3.
1. Burt Hummel (Kurt's dad, Glee)
"My Job is to love you no mater what"
It took a while for him to show his feelings toward Kurt but when he did he melted my heart. And he kept making me go awww every time he had a scene with his son! Such a great dad! In my perfect World every gay kid has a dad (and a mom) like that at home!
2. Rogelio de la Vega (Jane's dad, Jane The Virgin)
"Did you just call me dad?"
As soon as he found out he was Jane's father he did everything in his power to be part of her life. I love how sometimes in the series he express how awful it was for him not to be there for Jane growing up. It broke my heart when he had t broke up with Xiomara because she doesn't want to have any more children. I wish she'll change her mind as much as he do! He deserves it!
3. Richard Castle (Alexis' dad, Castle)
"Dad's teaching me the basics of no-limit Texas hold 'em."
I simply love their relationship. I like that she's the grown up in the family and I love when they play games together.
WORST TV DADS
If you think your dad is average or you like to complain about him here's a brief list of dads that will make you go hug your old man!
1. Tywin Lannister (Tyrion, Jaime, Cersei's dad, Game Of Thrones)
"The day that you were born. I wanted to carry you into the sea and let the waves wash you away."
Worst dad ever. Not just toward Tyrion but to all his children! (I loved his character though)
2. Robert Rayburn (Danny's dad, Bloodline)
"I'll give you the money for the restaurant or your son. You pick."
He was a good dad for the other kids but the way he treated Danny is unforgivable!
3. Lucious Lyon (Hakeem, Jamal and Andre's dad, Empire)
"If you kill me, everyone in this room would applaud. You see the little pretty blonde there? She hates me. My son wants me dead because I saved him from a con artist. But the worst thing that I did - I let the mother of my children rot in jail for 17 years. So trust me, Reg, if you shoot me, you would be everybody's personal hero. "
I stopped watching Empire after season 1. I started because I love Taraji SO MUCH but I lost my interest in the show unfortunately! But I'm sure Lucious is still a bad dad. Putting his kids against each others... What an a$$hole.
DADS THAT DIDN'T HAVE A CHANCE TO SHOW US HOW GREAT THEY COULD BE
For as much as we know they would have been a mess...
1. Chandler Bing (Jack and Erica's dad, Friends)
"My wife's an incredible woman. She's loving and devoted and caring. And don't tell her I said this, but the woman's always right... I love my wife more than anything in this world. And I... it kills me that I can't give her a baby... I really want a kid. And when that day finally comes, I'll learn how to be a good dad. But my wife... she's already there. She's a mother... without a baby... Please?"
I wish I could have just one more episode of friends to see how Chandler is doing taking care of the twins! Seeing him dealing with Phoebe's triplet was hilarious! By the way I cried again when I watched the scene where the quote comes from!
2. Barney Stinson (Ellie's dad, How I Met Your Mother)
"You are the love of my life. Everything I have and everything I am is yours. Forever."
The finale of HIMYM doesn't exist for me. I don't accept it and I'll always going to be in denial! But this scene was so sweet...
3. Fox Mulder (William's dad, The X Files)
Mulder: "What are you going to call him?"
Scully: "William. After your father."
He would have been such a great dad! The kind that teaches you a lot and plays with you all the time!
BEST FATHER FIGURE
Because it doesn't matter if you share the same blood!
Phil Coulson (Skye/Daisy Father Figure, Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.)
"Here I am, telling her something that could destroy her faith in humanity, and somehow she manages to repair a little piece of mine."
This is one of my favorite relationship on the show! I miss the beginning of the show where they weren't acting like they're just co workers!
BEST BOOK DAD:
I could not choose between these two and since in the TV adaptations are played by the same man I'm going to give them both the award of Best Book Dad.
By the way Donald Sutherland has the best dad face ever!
Mr Bennett (Elizabeth's father)
"An unhappy alternative is before you, Elizabeth. From this day you must be a stranger to one of your parents. Your mother will never see you again if you do not marry Mr. Collins, and I will never see you again if you do."
Gotta love Mr Bennett. He tries to stay out of all the drama but he loves his daughters and I'm a sucker when in a period drama the father is like "Nope, my daughter is not going to marry that douche bag... She will marry for love" while all the other dads are selling daughters away!
Earl Bartholomew of Shiring (Aliena's father, Pillars of the Earth)
The squire said: “It seems he once promised he would never marry her to someone she hated.”
Again. Great dad! Amazing beard!
WORST MOVIE DAD:
Darth Vader (Luke and Leia's dad, Star Wars)
"Luke I'm your father"
As much as I love all the books about daddy Vader and all the merch that calls him the best dad ever, he was just the worst.
Chops off his son's hand... Tortures his daughter and his son in law... Tries to kill them both for years... Has a bad influence on his grandson... Woah, definitely not father of the year!
BEST MOVIE DAD:
Daniel Hillard (Lydia, Chris and Natalie's dad, Mrs Doubtfire )
Lydia: "It's your job to be our father."
Daniel: "No it's not a job, it's a joy being your father, I don't have to play the part of your father, I am your father, I may act like a fool, but I am your father, okay? Always, rain, shine, it's the one wonderful thing in my life."
Does it need saying... All that this man does in order to be with his children... Such a great movie and the best movie dad ever!
*The dads I mention are of course just from show I follow/followed. Please comment and let me know if you agree or disagree and who do you think is the best/worst/etc dad.
