Human's Life

Today I finished Ayato's route. His route always makes me sad, most likely because of the overall theme. Just like 1 Litre of Tears, I always feel like crying after going through these kind of stories. I wrote about this before, but Ayato's friend ending is so sad it feels like a bad ending instead.. T-T That's why I've been avoiding Ayato's route, but I can't help it because I like him after all.

Ayato is Hitomi's senpai who was infamous for being really kind to the girls. He would never refuse his fans' invitations and presents, and so girls flocked to him. Ayato loves reading, especially mystery novels. His father is a mystery novel writer, so he said his interest towards them was probably inherited from his father. He had a rather frail body though, and at times he appeared to be pale, but he said it's because he's anemic.

Ayato went to London with Hitomi and her friends during summer vacation. When they were out sightseeing, suddenly he wasn't feeling well. He told Hitomi and her friends not to worry about him and to just continue sightseeing, while he would rest in the nearby park for a while. Worried, Hitomi followed him. Again, he said it was because he's anemic. Ayato asked Hitomi to let him lie on her lap, which she agreed. After that, it seems like Ayato was okay and so they went back to their hotel.

Ayato looked like he was doing okay for a while, so nothing really happened.

..until the bunkasai, that is. He asked Hitomi to look around with him, but when Hitomi left his side for a while to buy food, he suddenly disappeared. Hitomi looked for him, and found him on the companionway, blood was dripping from his mouth onto his palms. She panicked and quickly took him to the infirmary. It turned out that Wakatsuki-sensei knew about what's wrong with Ayato, but he only said to Hitomi that Ayato had a condition, and refused to say more. When the said person came to regain consciousness, Hitomi asked about what happened to him. Ayato said it's better for Hitomi not to know, and just think of it like a heavy anemia.

Several weeks after what happened, Takashi told Hitomi that Ayato was hospitalized. She immediately came to see him. There, she met Yoshihisa and his girlfriend Natsumi. Yoshihisa was a patient next door, who was very cheerful and lively. He was happy to see a patient of his age, and came to visit Ayato everyday. Ayato also invited Hitomi to have a Christmas party with Yoshihisa and Natsumi, and they had a very lively party together. After the party, Yoshihisa said to Natsumi that even though last year and this year they celebrated Christmas in the hospital, next year he will leave the hospital and they could go to the shop Natsumi wanted to go. He also told Hitomi that they will see each other again.

One day after the New Year, Hitomi came to visit Ayato again. She found it weird that Yoshihisa wasn't in Ayato's room, and asked him about that. Ayato told her that Yoshihisa died by the end of the year. Even though it's hard to believe, because he was so cheerful during the party, his conditions suddenly dropped, and so he passed away. Ayato then said that he and Yoshihisa had the same illness, an illness that no cure for it had been found yet. Seeing that a person with the same illness as himself died just like that, Ayato felt depressed as he knew death was waiting for him. He also told Hitomi not to get involved any further than this, and that she shouldn't see him again. The reason was because he didn't want Hitomi to feel the sadness and loss over seeing someone she know dies. Hitomi then went to the next room and met Natsumi, who was at loss over Yoshihisa's death.

A few weeks later, Hitomi decided that she would come to visit Ayato, despite what he said earlier. When she arrived, he wasn't in his room, so she took a walk in the garden. She met Natsumi and had a talk with her. Natsumi was still at loss, but she told Hitomi that she didn't regret any of this. At first she was so shocked when she found out about Yoshihisa's illness, she couldn't look at his face because it hurts so much. Yoshihisa told her that if only these kind of stuff make her sad, that don't come and visit. Natsumi didn't visit him even once, but after a month she couldn't take it any longer and came to visit him. She said that even though it ended like this, she didn't have any regrets, because they did their best until the end. It's better to have painful memories over a loved one's death, rather than running away and do nothing. Natsumi also said now it's Hitomi's turn to give support to Ayato. Even though Yoshihisa didn't make it, if someday a cure for the illness is found, Ayato would be able to recover.

After Natsumi left, Ayato came and talked to Hitomi. He said that nevermind what Natsumi said, Hitomi shouldn't get involved because him and his illness would only bring burden to Hitomi. However, Hitomi said she wanted to be involved. If someday she ends up having painful memories and would be crying because of them, it was her own choice. She couldn't bear leaving Ayato just like that, because she knew she would regret it for the rest of her life. So she asked Ayato to let her be by his side and support him. Ayato was at a loss for words after hearing what Hitomi said. Before leaving, Hitomi then said she will come and visit him again after the school trip, and that she will bring a souvenir for him.

During the snowboarding trip, Hitomi called the hospital to check Ayato's conditions, but it seems like he was okay. The next day, Ayato called her and said that he was going to leave the hospital on the 28th. Since he was going back to the mansion, Hitomi offered to pick him up from the hospital. On that day, Hitomi rushed to the hospital to meet Ayato, but on the way she was hit by a motorcycle when crossing the road. She woke up in a hospital, with no serious wounds on her body. Looks like she fainted because of the shock from being hit, despite having no fatal wounds. She heard someone rushing to the room outside, whom she thought to be Takashi. She prepared herself to get scolded, but it turned out that the person was Ayato. He hugged her really tight, and expressed his fear of losing her when he heard that she had an accident. Apparently it was because when Ayato called to tell her she doesn't need to pick him up, Takashi told him that Hitomi got into an accident and it looks like she's going to die. Hitomi told Ayato to calm down, and that she didn't have any fatal wounds that could kill her. Ayato then fell down, because he was running all the way. He asked the nurse to let him stay near Hitomi.

On the day of the graduation, Ayato called Hitomi to their mansion rooftop at night. He told her that he always thought death would always come for humans, despite them being ill or not, and all that humans can do is just to wait for that time to come. But after meeting Hitomi, he realized that just waiting around is impossible, and how about his thoughts of giving up or losing hope was foolish. For evidence, when Hitomi got into that accident, he rushed beyond any reasons. He then asked Hitomi to stay by his side, even though he may cause Hitomi pain and sorrow. Ayato said he wanted to believe in the future, and in Hitomi.

A few years later, Hitomi already graduated and got into the same university as Ayato. His illness would still act up at times, but they would still do their best to go forward. That day, the doctor from the hospital told them that finally a cure has been found for that illness. He said that Ayato did well, and it's really great that they made it in time. It won't be instantly cured, but his total recovery was certain. Both Ayato and Hitomi found it hard to believe, but were very happy to hear about that. Ayato told her that he was glad to believe in the future and Hitomi. He said he was really happy to have someone like her by his side, and thanked her for always supporting him all this time. Being able to recover dissolved his fears, and they could continue to walk forward together from now on.

That was so touching.. *sobs*
It hurts so much watching his friend ending, especially when he said the last words. I guess I'm still your typical happy ending person, since I really can't stand bad endings..
