We have a minority Government and Oppositions always oppose new taxes. (Those of us who remember back to introducing-the-GST days can only point and laugh as the Labor Government complains that the Coalition Opposition is being so mean and unhelpful.)

Unfortunately, I think that even with a petroleum-free society we'd still end up caring what the monotheist barbarians of the north americas thing and want.

I'm not too sure about that - the way things are going, China's likely to be the first to develop seriously good clean energy tech, and China and Japan *both* beat out the USA as trading partners for us, by a reasonably large margin.

It might not be the most green argument (ignore the middle east) but from the point of view of getting the right on side, its a good one.
