So, now I have experienced The Tomorrow People

Friday night, went to my first meeting of Spaced Out Inc, the Melbourne queer SF club. It was a session at the Richmond Library viewing selected episodes of The Tomorrow People, a series I had heard of but never seen. We saw the first episode ever (from the Slaves of Jedikiah series), the first episode that introduced Peter Davison to the world of TV (and Davison to his future wife Sandra Dickinson) from the A Man for Emily series, and both episodes of a two-parter (The Dirtiest Business) involving KGB v SIS tussles over a telepathic Russian girl.

It was wonderful British 1970s SF kitsch, with somewhat startling difference in tone between the different series. Apparently, there has long been a gay resonance reading of the series (teenagers "breaking out"--as coming into their powers is called--banding together, having to hide their capacities from others ...).

Enjoyed it, and the company, lots. Clearly, should have joined Spaced Out Inc, which I first heard of just recently through an ad on Joy FM, years ago.

life, gay, sf
