Have a look at Krugman's talk, the US economy had more recessions than we tend to remember.

People were so impressed by the postwar boom, it tends to get a bit oversold. Though the per capita growth rates overall were impressive, particularly in Japan and Western Europe. Of course, one might argue that 1973-82 was, in its way, the result of a presumption of growth.
