Years ago, when I worked at the Parliamentary Library, as I stood and waited for a photocopier to warm up, I used to amuse myself contemplating the value of labour being wasted compared to the trivial amounts of energy being saved.
There is quite a push to increase the tech level in classrooms: the current flashy thing being interactive whiteboards, often linked to laptops.
When one is teaching (given that in primary and secondary school you are teaching conscripts) having an effective "flow" going is extremely valuable. The kids are focused, the thing is working.
And then the laptop's screen saver has come on; or the dvd-player needs to warm up again; or the fancy touch control screen has powered down; or whatever and the energy of the moment is dissipated.
I wonder how much valuable teaching time is wasted to save trivial amounts of energy.
