Survey finds that Kiwi women are the most promiscuous in the world, the only country where the women have more sexual partners on average than the men.

How is this possible? If the women are sleeping with the men, then surely the average is going to average? I admit, my knowledge of statistics is limited to one grad dip course, but I really don't get how that can be. Of course, the Kiwi women may be having sex with each other, as may be the Kiwi men, which would imply that the above statistic indicates the NZ lesbians are a lot more sexually successful than NZ gay men. Alternatively a lot of New Zealand women may be sleeping with foreign men, which might explain why in all other countries men on average have more sexual partners than women. In fact, now I think of it, that explains it all - men from all over the world are having sex with Kiwi women (and given the Kiwi women I know, that makes considerable sense). You will note that I didn't even include the sheep in my calculations.

Suppose we have 50 men and 50 women. If all 50 women sleep with only 10 of the men, but all sleep with all 10 of them, then women (on average) have 10 sexual partners each.

Men, on the other hand, have 10 men with 50 partners each and 40 men with 0 partners each. Which, of course, still ends up with an average of 10 sexual partners each.

So, as you imply, either more Kiwi women are sleeping with other Kiwi women than Kiwi men are sleeping with other Kiwi men. Or more Kiwi women are sleeping with non-Kiwis than Kiwi men are sleeping with non-Kiwis. Or both.

All of which assumes accurate reporting. Another possibility is that Kiwi women exaggerate their number of sexual partners. Or Kiwi men underestimate their number of sexual partners. Or both.

So, there's lots of ways it could happen. But you're right, it can't happen if Kiwi women are only sleeping with Kiwi men and vice versa.

I still think this statistic about Kiwi women is a potential boon for the NZ tourist industry.
