A sad perennial: prominent Presidential candidate
seriously not getting the outside world. (Though I am not sure the comment about France was all that clueless.)
None of the leading Republican candidates will defend Dubya’s management of the Iraq war.
Defending Rudi’s liberty-needs-authority point. The
very different meanings of Bushie and Reaganite.
Why Al Gore
is sort of in the Presidential race but probably won’t. A site to keep track of the campaign
“horse-race”. A prominent Dem Presidential candidate
will continue despite wife’s breast cancer. A case of “citizen activism” turns out
to be less so.
This is a fascinating Presidential race. First, the quality of the candidates is relatively high. Second, the chances of the next President being yet another white male Protestant of Northern European origins seem remote (the only exception so far among the 44 men to hold the Presidency being JFK, who was a Catholic of Northern European origins). The likely Republican candidate is Rudi (if elected, the second Catholic and first person of Italian/Mediterranean background to be President). The likely Dem. candidate is Hilary (if elected, the first woman, though otherwise the normal Protestant of Northern European background) or Obama (if elected, the first president of an African background). Though Barack Obama is
Protestant and therefore
“spiritually” Northern European as was, particularly given his Jamaican background,
Colin Powell, the only other serious African-origin Presidential prospect.
A little known political fact-the US has had
an Amerindian Vice President.
