Privilege is such an interesting and much more complicated topic than a lot of people make it out to be. Although, I do agree using privilege, especially the condescending way a lot of people I run into use it, doesn't open discussion as so much put the other on defense. Everyone views their life as hard and they don't want to be told the whole, "But you have it so easy because you are a white male!" I had a white male friend who was so poor growing up that he and his brothers used to break into cars at the mall and steal change people left on their dashboards. He and his brothers and his sister (5 in all) would have to split one can of spaghetti-Os and that is all they got to eat for the day. He gets very VERY VERY angry whenever someone uses the privilege line on him. I think once he told a girl, "Yeah, living in your upper-middle class mansion when your daddy the lawyer gave you a brand new car for your 16th birthday." Now, he is definitely not a misogynist but he kind of sees how some people sort of just fling the word privilege around simplifying life and spitting at his own difficult childhood. Now, he says his difficult life made him and his siblings strong people He leads a successful career in the army and his sister has some major career abroad.

I used to mock it for similar reasons but when a girl who is not so much conventionally pretty wins Wimbleton gets fat-shammed and ugly-shammed by media when a man can look like a potato and don't get so much hatred or rape jokes or threats of violence for instance, it is something that people do need to examine before they launch criticism. Socially, it is easy to be a male. You can tweet pictures of your junk or get involved in a prostitution scandal and become viable candidates for the Mayor of New York... if you're male. There are tons of movies in Hollywood in which an conventionally unattractive male... a nerd gets the conventionally hot girl but in the reverse? Fat girls are for jokes! Same with LGBT community!

However, even so there is the concept of privilege, I think the skeptic link clearly identifies it is a subject that is a lot more complicated and should be used with care and it changes depending on region. Unfortunately, it has been watered-down by pretentious university students who want to sound smart but really are hurting the dialogue rather than helping.

I agree and have nothing to add except to say I am pleased that what I wrote generated such a thoughtful and informed response.
