09. Fanfiction: discuss
I think any author who has a vast fanfiction following should be FLATTERED and not try to put a stop to it while insulting the writers (Gabaldon, you whore).
Fanfiction allows us to delve deeper into created characters. For example, I love Ron, and I would love to know what went through his mind during certain aspects of his life. Furthermore, sending Ron on more adventures seems like exactly what a lover of the story and the character would want to do.
I find there to be a lot of terrible fanfic out there, so I can understand why some don't like it. But then you get fanfiction like "Never Enough" and it is jarring how good and moving the writing is. There are great fanfictions like that all over our fandom! I love these characters so much, that I want to continue spending time with them, and fanfiction allows me to do that.
I've never sought out Outlander fic, nor will I. The story leaves me too satisfied, it just covers everything. But I would totally understand and might even read a fic about Fergus and Marsali in book 6. How could you not want to spend more time on that?
I got into fanfiction by just googling. I'm not kidding. I googled Ron and Hermione. The first fic I read, I don't even know who wrote it or where to find it. It was Ron and Hermione were captured, in cages across from each other. They were cold and starved and veritably tortured. Ron died. Yeah, it was tragic. I don't even know if it was any good. It scared me a way from fanfiction for a little bit.
But then I started reading more. The first one I can remember is "Eternal Sunshine of the Scorgified Mind"...and it was decent. I don't know what was after that, but those two fics marked my beginning.
And then one day I was listening to a song by Spill Canvas, and suddenly I needed to write an R/Hr fic. That's how the abomination of my first fic was born: "My Secret Is Fatally Gorgeous". All my fics come from listening to music and feeling it through the characters of the story. Even fest requests, I spend a lot of time before writing listening to music until I find something perfect.
When I READ a fic, this is what I look for:
Unless the summary is really appealing, I only read R and NC-17.
No main character can be older than Bill.
I do not like things that ignore DH. EWE is fine, but please consider DH.
Ron/Hermione, Percy/Anyone, Harry/Draco, Dean/Seamus, George/Angelina, Ron/Harry, Charlie/Practically anyone
So I'm not all that picky.
