Enjoy yourself with no regrets [Risa]

The smell of salt water and the quiet rush of the waves were a soothing constant in the background. Chris strolled down the boardwalk, restless, searching for something he couldn’t quite put his finger on. Awake early for no good reason, he had slipped out of bed and dressed quietly, padding barefoot out the door with his shoes in hand ( Read more... )

Bleary-eyed and slightly unfocused, as a full night of sleep and then some tended to leave him, Karl stumbled into his clothes and down to the hotel lobby in search of food, caffeine, and anybody he knew, not necessarily in that order. It was an ungodly hour but sunshine and rumbling stomachs were not to be denied.

There were a surprising lot of people already in bathing suits with drinks in hand. Karl looked hopefully around for a replicator -- he'd never get tired of ordering things from those -- or sudden convenient tray of muffins, and instead spotted Chris across the room. Several near collisions with giant fruity cocktails and one or two definite arse-gropes later (friendly planet!) and Karl could smell the coffees Chris was holding. Glorious coffee.

"Morning," he said, attempting a winning smile but managing a yawn. "Think I could con you out of one of those?"

The chat with Bones had left Chris in high spirits, not to mention somewhat aroused considering the subject of most of their conversation. He remained seated for a few minutes after the other man left to continue his shopping, content to finish his coffee and compose himself a bit before heading upstairs. The cafe had put the drinks in special insulated cups, guaranteed to keep it piping hot, so the blue-haired girl behind the counter had informed him. Chris expected that neither Karl nor Zach were awake yet, as it was still on the early side.

It was a little surprising, therefore, when he caught sight of Karl stumbling toward him. Chris handed over one of the cups with a grin. "It's yours. There's danishes and other pastries I couldn't quite identify in the bag, but I was assured they're all quite safe for human consumption."

He grinned at Karl's pre-caffeine haze. "I was on my way up, thought I'd bring these to you and Zach. The coffee's amazing."

"You're the best," Karl said fervently as he plopped into an empty chair and took one of the waiting cups. Chris was right -- it was good, and tasted a little different from any blend he'd ever had on Earth. Clearly the future appreciated coffee. The glazed croissant-like thing he tried was tasty, too. "Sleep well?" He was muffled by a mouthful of pastry. "Feel like I was in a coma. I think it's something in the air."

Ocean air, like back home. It made you hungry, too.

"Not too bad," Chris told him. "I woke up early and decided to take a walk, clear my head a bit." He bit into a strawberry turnover with a happy sound. "It's gorgeous here. I thought I might do some exploring later, maybe find something to do outside."

"How about you?" It was so beautiful outside, he was itching to get out and explore some of the activities going on. And it was easier to keep busy and not brood outdoors, too. "I was looking over a listing yesterday. There's rock climbing and horseback riding, all kinds of things. Or the beach."

With caffeine now in his bloodstream, Karl had perked up noticeably. "Awesome. I wanna do it all. We definitely need to get Zach on a horse somehow. I can't even envision it, but it's theoretically possible, right?"

Chris' eyes were alight with mischief as he replied. "We'll need to get photographic evidence if we manage it. I definitely want to remember the occasion." Surely they could coax Zach to go riding with them, couldn't they? He made up his mind to be as persuasive as possible.

"First camping, now horses. Sometimes I think we're too mean to him. I saw a sign-up for an alien yoga class at the front desk, that'll make him feel better." Karl eyed him casually over the bit of croissant he'd lifted to his mouth. "You like yoga? You should go, too. Yoga buddies."

He popped the pastry into his mouth and chewed, the picture of innocence.

"I wonder how alien yoga is different," Chris mused, equally innocent. "I mean, the human body only bends so many ways." He observed Karl over the edge of his coffee cup. "Might be enlightening." Settling back in his chair, he finished off his pastry and reached for another.

Karl's eyebrow twitched slightly. Fucking actors and their poker faces. Chris and Zach would just spill -- if there was something to spill, of which Karl wasn't completely certain -- when they wanted to, he figured, and he didn't push it. "Just make sure you come out of it with your toes pointing in the right direction," he said wryly. "I'm gonna hit up the stores for some stuff for Nat and the boys. I'm so tempted to get them a neutered tribble, but..."

Chuckling, Chris cracked a tiny grin. As far as he knew, Zach hadn't said anything to Karl either. He felt a little bad keeping him in the dark, but it had never seemed like the right time yet.

"Yeah, I should probably do some shopping of my own," Chris replied. He laughed at Karl's comment, teasing a little. "I'm not sure a tribble could keep up with those two of yours. We should make sure to have plenty of adventures for you to tell them about, too."
