The first three had gone well, Ensign Nylen thought. He grinned, straightening his tie and stepping back up to the podium. “Everyone having fun so far?” Waiting for the crowd to quiet a little, he continued, glancing toward the wings and finding them conspicuously empty. There was a hushed conversation going on backstage which ended abruptly as the next entrant appeared. “Okay everyone, I’d like to hear a round of applause for our First Officer. Give it up for Commander Spock!” Nylen clapped enthusiastically, watching as someone pushed encouraged Spock out onto the stage.

It took all of his practiced grace not to stumble. The cane helped his balance (just like Sybok said it would, but how could he have predicted this?), and next thing he knew he was standing at the center of the stage, one hand resting on the cane at his side and the other held squarely behind his back ( ... )

The effect of the costume took a while to actually catch up with Bones, sitting at one of the tables nursing his drink. It seemed so natural to see the commander up there looking so fucking regal and shit. Wasn't fair, really.

Maybe it was the cowboy get-up he was wearing, but Leonard felt like getting some trouble started. "Two hundred," he called out with a smirk.

The sight of Spock fumbling with the elaborate cravat had been endearing, but Nyota had to admit the finished costume was... impressive. She adjusted the bandanna that went with her pirate costume, shooting a mischievous grin at Leo when she heard him call out.

"Three hundred!" she countered, one hand on her hip.

"Five hundred." That number came out of his mouth sooner than he expected, and it was quite a chunk of his money, but something about how Nyota was looking at the two of them... yeah.

Giving her a smirk of his own, he adjusted his hat and leaned back in his seat.

Chuckling, Nyota shook her head at Leo. She could read that look from across the room. Leaning against the wall, she crossed her arms and prepared for a challenge, though somehow she suspected there would be no losers in this scenario.

"Six hundred!"

"One thousand." Half his allotment, but yeah. This was going to work out well for everyone.

The look on Spock's face made every bit of this worth it.

Nyota was thinking much the same as she looked between the other two, Spock's expression not betraying the warmth zinging through the bond.

"Fifteen hundred."

That little... "Two grand," he called out, and there went all his money. Standing up, he strode over to the shocked looking auctioneer and handed him his credit chip.

For some strange reason, he couldn't exactly look at Spock right now.

Ensign Nylen blinked and quickly accepted payment from the doctor, grinning broadly.

"Congratulations, sir," he told the man. "And on behalf of the recreation department, thank you!" He directed him to the side of the stage, where Spock was waiting after a hasty exit.

On one hand, what had gone on between them ha been just as silly as this entire costume party, and on the other, he enjoyed watching them compete -- the flirtatious nature of Nyota's bids and then the assertive tone of Leonard's, until finally the limit had been called out.

Really, two thousand?

He stepped off to the side, lifting the cane into his grip and then shifting it to the other hand. What did Leonard intend for the evening?

McCoy paced a bit on his own, not entirely sure what his own intentions were... he could blame the costumes, to some extent. But there was more.

They needed this, had been dancing around this for a while now. But maybe Leonard needed this, some sort of excuse, to let go and do what he wanted to with Spock.

Finding the back of the stage, he almost ran into Spock, not recognizing the shoes (his head was still down, didn't want to see anyone else right now).

Spock stopped before they could completely collide, raising the cane between them, the knuckles of his hand pressing against Leonard's chest.

"Leonard," he said quietly; the sound of the party and the auction felt muffled around them, and he didn't need more than a murmur in the shadows here.

"Yeah," he replied, people in costume laughing and rushing back and forth around them. "You wanna get out of here?" he asked, looking up and catching Spock's eyes for the first time all night.

"Yes." He wasn't exactly sure where, only that he wanted to be alone with him. They didn't have to go through the party; there was a mutual back room between this room and the one next to it. Knowing this, Spock looped his arm with Leonard's and led him out that way.

Soon they were out in the corridors, extremely well-lit after being in the dimmer light of the rec room for a while. They walked in silence, the direction they were heading in giving Leonard an idea.

"C'mon," he said, heading toward the arboretum, thankfully empty when they entered. McCoy took a few steps toward the trees and away from Spock before turning around and looking at him. "Is this okay?"

Okay for what, he wasn't sure yet, but he didn't want Spock to know how unsettled he felt right now.
