Since I am planning to move in a few months, I decided I really need to get a jump on getting organized for it. I do not have an awful lot to move but I would just as soon only have to pack the things I have to take with me. Therefore, I started going through my drawers and closet to see if I can pare down my wardrobe.
In this case, I have decided to get rid of as many t-shirts as possible that I have collected over the years. I am losing all the bear t-shirts I used to wear to bars, since that is a rarity anymore. I am also losing some of the travel shirts I had collected. My Mom wound up giving me about 7 t-shirts on the cruise last year, so I kept one. My London Mind The Gap t-shirt is going as are some of the Turtle Creek Chorale t-shirts I had collected over time. I just never wear any of them. I am even losing one or two of my Appalachian State t-shirts. Most of these decisions were easy.
I also decided that I needed to get rid of any shirts that were worn out, had holes, etc. This was much harder as some of these t-shirts were favorites. There was an Orange County Chopper long sleeve tee that I have worn for years, but it had holes under the arm that were not worth sewing up. In fact, I tugged the fabric a bit too see if it was still strong enough to try to repair, but it ripped asunder quite easily. By far the hardest decision was a particular Turtle Creek Chorale shirt. Rather it was actually two, as one was tan with a dark moss print and the other dark moss with a reverse tan print. The logo was a stylized turtle with text winding around the edge -
"Behold the turtle. He only makes progress only when he sticks his neck out." James B. Conant
This is a favorite quote for me, no matter the relation to Turtle Creek Chorale. I have spent a lifetime of sticking my neck out, and not all of those experiences have been the best. However, it is the best way I know of living. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. I do not want to be the type of guy who feels like he has been left behind. Yep, I shed a tear or two when I put the shirts in the garbage. they are way too worn to give away, but at least they will biodegrade...
