Getting in the Spirit

Dec 05, 2010 03:12

Having a hard time doing so this year. I am feeling much more like Scrooge and Grinch than anything else.

The exception is when I think about my niece Sophie. This is her first Smith family Christmas. She is my parent's only grandchild so I know she is going to get plenty from them. Her mom, Rachel, is a reader. My mom is a reader. I was a voracious reader growing up and have let that habit lapse over time as my attention has been taken by other things.

Anyway, while talking to my mom today about the upcoming trip to NC for the holidays, I told Mom I wanted to get her some books. I know she is too young to understand or appreciate it, but I had some childhood books I loved more than anything and I hope to pass that love to her. So, this Christmas she is getting two favorites from Richard Scarry, "Busy, Busy World", "Cars and Trucks and Things That Go" and "Best Word Book Ever". Since I have to travel on Christmas day, Mom is going to get them on my behalf and go ahead and wrap them so she can open them. I will then inscribe them so that when she gets older, she knows her Uncle Evan cared enough to make sure she was well entertained as she grew up and hopefully grows her own love of reading.

Mom says she loves to be read to already at 9 months. I hope to be able to read a story or two to her when I am home. Hopefully, I will not scare the dickens out of her.

Yes, I guess I am turning into a sentimental old fool...
