I attended Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania in the United States from 1980 to 1984. Swarthmore College is a Quaker school, i.e. pacifists of the Society of Friends. I am not a Quaker. I was merely an applied mathematics and statistics student, a female one. (At that time, I experienced none of the oppression complained about by the STEM for Girls cadre of the 2010s - 2020s. I don't think there was oppression then, and there is even less so now.)

Anyway, I am saddened and dismayed to read of the role of the Society of Friends i.e. the Quakers, in this account of those early days of glasnot and perstroika. I was not involved in any of that, was an IBM Senior Associate Scientist/Engineer through the latter 1980s and half of the 1990s; I was blissfully unaware of anything other than seek and search and queueing modeling for storage product devices and hoped to move up to processors one day once deemed worthy.
