Girl From Mars

‘As soon as this whole mess is over, we’ll all breathe easy,’ James remarks as if our tight-knit group had gotten itself into a spot of bother at school. I find myself nodding as I slip my scarf around my neck. Sirius grunts and pulls his leather jacket on with much more vigour than required, a cigarette sticking out from between his lips. Peter shuffles meekly near the door.

We had spent the evening going over old photographs and memories: reminisces of happier times than this. Lily silently wipes away a tear, and James slips a long, protective arm around her neck. ‘I love you,’ he whispers into her ear, and my grip on my wand inside my pocket tightens.

‘Well then,’ James says, his smile just that little too cheery. ‘We’ll see you soon.’ After a moment of indecision, he grips Sirius in a bear hug and I see both their eyes smart. James and Peter hug awkwardly, and then I squeeze James tight. Lily is now hugging Peter - I notice him break away quickly as he’s never really been the type for affection. Lily and Sirius, despite years spent in envy of each other, both hold tightly, crying openly.

Lily reaches out to me and I catch her scent - freshly-baked cakes with a hint of musk. I realise I’m saying goodbye to my best friend, my Lily, and it could be forever. I cry all the more, burying my face into her neck. She holds on until I realise I’m expected to leave, and I untangle myself and fall through the door into the brisk autumn night without looking back.

Sirius and Peter have already apparated.

I drop onto a bench, wiping away the tears that blind me. The clouds shift and the rain starts, soaking me to the skin. My threadbare coat that has been washed just too many times is not enough to keep me dry, and using my wand is that little bit too much trouble.

After several minutes of pushing the inevitable to the back of my mind, I jump up suddenly, startling even myself. My legs stride with purpose across the square, and my eyes flit to the window which I know is the bathroom. James’ silhouette steps into the shower cubicle, and, satisfied, my hand knocks on the door.

As predicted, Lily answers, a puzzled expression on her face.

‘Remus, what-‘

‘Lily, I love you,’ my mouth says before I can stop it. Her jaw drops open and she looks at me in complete and utter shock.

‘I love you and I don’t want you to leave me.’ I’m still standing in her doorway, the autumn rain dripping down my collar and onto my back, leaves flapping pathetically at my ankles.

‘Remus, I…’ I shook my head.

‘Don’t say anything, Lil. It’s just - I, I know it’s ridiculous. But if I never saw you again…’ A strangled sob escapes my throat and Lily places a hand on my arm, which I shake off quickly. Too quickly.

‘Just, don’t Lil, I-I’ll get going now.’

I turn away and Lily grabs my arm, pressing her lips firmly against mine. It is then that I realise that after all of this, I will never see her again.

‘Remus, I am so, so, sorry,’ She whispers, and I pull her against my chest.

‘I love you, Lil. But you were always Jim’s girl.’ I press a kiss to her forehead and walk off into the night.

And a week later, my Girl From Mars was killed.
