I have eaten vegan for the past two days, and am pleased to say that it has been tasty and nutritious. I get the sense that flavour is very important - it's almost like Japanese food, with the careful use of ingredients, subtle layers of flavour and general tastiness. So many vegetables.
As I am typing this, I am listening to Brent read to Tallulah - transmitted to me via a baby monitor. Brent reads Dr Seuss with Jazz rhythyms - it is cool, but disconcerting. I love the way little kids banter and talk back when they are being read picture books, it is darling. I went to at least 5 different bookstores today, two of them second-hand, and bought Toki a copy of My Cat Likes to Sleep in Boxes. One of the best picture books ever. I never realised it was a NZ book, but it explains why no one in Australia has heard of it.
My art experience at Te Papa today was overwhelmed by the fact that most of the artworks there I was already initimately familiar with - because prints of them hung in the chidren's library at Dunedin Public Library when I was a kid. What does that say about Te Papa's curating? Or about Dunedin Public Library? I think it says good things about DPL, and slightly more anaemic things about Te Papa - although the artwork was good, and definitely iconic.
Now, through the baby monitor, I hear a maori lullaby. I am saying goodby to hilly Wellington tomorrow, and flying down to flat Christchurch. I have significantly more books now than I started with. My bag is going to be heavy.
