I get music from different places. The 22nd Annual Folk Alliance Conference is going on in Memphis right now and I got a hold of a couple of different publicity tracks for download, so I thought I'd share them with y'all.
Way Down - Anaïs Mitchell The blurb:
Mitchell’s “Way Down,” off her upcoming release Hadestown, out March 9, 2010, featuring Justin Vernon, Ani DiFranco and Greg Brown on Righteous Babe Records
This song is awesome!! Very cool New Orleans jazzy feel to it. There are horns! Horns!!. Anyway, you should dl it and give it a shot. I suspect I shall be checking out this album when it's released.
Survivor Blues - Cory Branan Eh, you know me. I love me some Cory Branan. This is from a podcast he did with Ardent Presents. I won't link to it because the website has a linkback feature, but it's pretty easy to google.
Anyway, I kind of love this song. It's going to be on his next album (for which there is not yet a release date as far as I know. SIGH). Here, have some lyrics:
She wondered once about her luck
Put out a match with a tear
She said "I'm bored to death and bored to-
Look you want way the hell away from here?"
He said, "You don't look that tough to me"
He leaned and lit his cigarette
"How 'bout you wait to see just what you regret?
'Til we get what we get"
Chorus:
Say it'd make you stronger
First you've gotta survive
What didn't kill you
Make you wish you'd died
She struggled to read his knuckle tattoos
Beneath the ring and the scar
But the left said love, the right read true
She said, "Please say you've got a car"
"It's parked out back
It's pointed out of state
It's a recent acquisition
We should probably ditch the plates
And it won't get me far enough to ever lose track
But it's plenty car enough for never coming back"
(Chorus)
"Yellow duffle in the seat back yonder
A bunch of pretty junk I bought her
It's yours if you want
Either you or the flames
To me it's the same"
She said, "No thanks, man
My baggage is packed
With this name on my ankle
This knife in my back
But I know a place on our way out if town
It's as good as burned down"
(Chorus)
You call that a scar?
A bruise, a tear
Pillow marks
Souvenirs
At some point today I will do something productive. We have not yet reached that point.
