Hungary started out her life as a nomadic horseman, raised as a boy by her grandfather, Magyar. We don't know much about it beyond that as canon hasn't shown it; however, the Hungarians (so named because they reminded Europe of the Huns) eventually settled down and became a "real" country, after invading everyone in Europe from Spain to viking Denmark. The Magyar were insane. Hungary was unified and converted to Christianity by 1000 AD, and spent the next two hundred odd years as a fairly prosperous kingdom. Both the growing Holy Roman Empire and the Cumans (which in Hetalia = the Ottoman Empire = Turkey) attempted to invade the young country, but Hungary was able to drive them both off. However, the Cumans especially turned out to be a huge problem. Seeking extra military assistance, Hungary therefore extended the hand of friendship to a homeless Order of knights: The Teutonic Order (who would grow up to be Prussia). In exchange for helping her fight the Cumans, the Teutonic Order would be allowed to settle, and in Hetalia, the two child countries became friends, fighting together and competing, even confiding reluctantly in one another.

It didn't last. Conflicts over the church (Teutonic Order supported the Roman church, Hungary supported the Byzantine) led the Order to be kicked out of Hungary thirty years later, where he headed north for the Baltics. The two were still friends, though; we see Hungary (half teasing, most likely) describing him to Lithuania in a strip, and again interacting in the 1520s. (They don't get along at all in the present, and this dates back to the 18th century at least: my theory is that they had been growing apart anyway, and Hungary's friendship with Austria drove the final nail in the coffin.)

Hungary was hit very hard in the Mongol invasions that followed soon after Teutonic Order's leaving: rebuilding after, she gave shelter to a large amount of Cumans who begged for Hungarian aid, and built a lot of fortresses, castles, and walls that were later able to drive the Mongols off when they tried coming back. After that, Hungary had a relatively peaceful stretch of time (well, for middle ages Europe), expanding into both the Ottoman Empire and the Holy Roman Empire. However, soon after this, Hungary fell into a decline-succession problems, financial problems, weak kings, the whole nine yards. In 1514, the peasants rebelled against the king, which was followed soon after by the Ottoman Empire swooping in. By 1526, the Ottoman Empire had captured half of Hungary, and the country was in complete chaos. The kingdom, roughly divided into two, elected two different kings: one, a member of the Habsburgs, thus giving Austria (and the Holy Roman Empire) control of Hungary. The Ottoman Empire then divided the other half of Hungary in half, taking the south east portions for himself but unable to capture the north west. If this sounds confusing, it was even worse at the time: Hungary was thrown into complete chaos. To make matters more complicated, much of the Ottoman part of Hungary became Protestant, and the parts under Habsburg rule remained Catholic. Eventually, Hungary was pretty much settled into two halves: Ottoman Hungary; the largest portion, and Royal Hungary, the part in the Holy Roman Empire.

Now partitioned, there was a long struggle between the Habsburgs and the Ottoman Empire-and Hungary herself-to gain full control of the Kingdom (or, more specifically, to gain dominance in the region). In 1683, the Ottomans tried and failed to invade Austria, after which the tide was turned in the long struggle, and Austria was able to conquer all of Hungary. She then promptly turned around and began fighting him, briefly gaining independence. However, by 1708, the Habsburgs had defeated the Hungarians, and she was back under his rule.

(Of course, all this is in the future for Hungary, as I'm taking her from 1552. She's just won a major victory against the Ottomans, and has hopes that this will lead to her independence. It will not, quite obviously.)

Personality:We have yet to see how this affects the character Hungary in Hetalia-that is, what she was doing during this time; we only see her injured due to attacks from the Ottoman Empire. But, since her capital and most of her land was under Ottoman control during this time, I'll be playing Hungary under the assumption that she was taken to live in his house during this period, unwilling as it is.

To say that Hungary hasn't had the best of luck in her life is probably an understatement, but you wouldn't know it to look at her. Described in her first appearance as a "bright, big sisterly" character, that's pretty much the case: Hungary never lets her situation get her down, makes the best of the situation, and stays cheerful. "Level-headed" is a good way to describe her: somewhat unusually in Hetalia, Hungary is not terribly arrogant, full of herself, or reckless, with one notable exception. She can both take a joke and take things in stride, isn't too serious or silly, and is generally fairly mature. She's consistently kind to others-taking care of Italy, taking in the Teutonic Order, offering Lithuania advice-and is reluctant to harm others for no reason. On the other hand, her idea of justified reasons for harming people runs the gauntlet from "was trying to hurt people she likes" (understandable) to "Prussia, shut up" (kind of understandable)… to "daring to look at Austria while he's naked/not naked/playing the piano" (uh… yeah).

Hungary doesn't generally stand for much nonsense, but the one big exception is, well, her her 'perverted nature.' Hungary loves herself some boy's love, and she extends that to seeing men vulnerable, being groped, and otherwise helpless. She never does it herself, but she has trouble finding the will to stop it when she does see it… at least, not before she has the chance to take some pictures or watch a little bit. She insists her feelings are pure and platonic… but yeah, we're on to you, Hungary. At her canon point, she probably hasn't fully awoken to this kink of hers, but you'd better believe it wouldn't take much for her interest to be sparked.

Despite this, she's still a helpful, kind girl, and determined and not to proud to ask for help. That said, though, at her current point in canon, she doesn't have many friends or allies, caught between two very strong powers, and the only relationship she does have worth noting is Prussia. While as adults they hate one another, they were close as children, and some of that still lingers in the 1550s. While they've gone their separate ways, the comic still shows them as basically friendly to one another (even as Hungary teases Prussia), and also shows that this extended to at least the early 18th century-presumably before Hungary began to really warm to Austria, and Prussia started to become a world power himself. While she argues with him a lot and clearly considers herself superior, at this point he's probably the closest Hungary has to a friend. Her other relationships are with the Ottoman Empire/Turkey (hate hate hate), and Austria, who… is complicated. He's technically ruler of a third of her land, and takes better care of it than Turkey does, but at this point in time Hungary is still pretty wary about his influence-and the idea that he might try to take over the rest of her. Still, she doesn't hate her future husband by any means: they just aren't friends yet.

Powers & Abilities:As a country, Hungary is more durable than the average person, and a bit stronger. She's also more or less immortal and ages very slowly: currently she's probably about 16 or 17, physically, despite being hundreds of years old, and never ages past her early twenties in canon. She's had years and years and years of practice with all sorts of weapons, and is a very effective swordsman, archer, and rider; it's joked in Hetalia that she's the 'manliest' character, and the strongest when she's angry.

She also has the ability to appear anywhere there is BL going on with a digital camera.

What items will they be bringing with them? This time around, the clothes on her back and an old, battered flag of the Black Army of Hungary (crazy mercenaries).

Posting Samples
Third-Person Sample: It is easy enough to do.

Take out the twine keeping her hair back. Use her fingers to smooth out the knots. Use her fingers to try and make it sleek and wonder how the women in the town, the rich ones, with braids and ribbons, make it so. Servants, maybe.

Take off her clothes, layer by layer. The doublet, the jerkin, hose and stockings and boots. Stand there naked, blushing and chilly.

And dress again: chemise first. Bodice and skirt. Gown next-then the partlet. Italian style, a burnt red. She has no jewelry or ribbons to add, no one to make her hair, and when she peers into the mirror, it looks… weird.

Hungary doesn't feel like a girl at all, but as she is one, there's nothing to do about it. She puts her hair back loose braid, aware it's improper matched with the dress, and pulls her boots back on for good measure. It would be easier to stay a boy forever, but it wouldn't be right, either, for the kingdom-or whatever she is now, not territory, not region-she must not hide. Must not flinch. How will she lead her men to victory if she hides from them by pretending to be something she isn't?

She knows perfectly well that her men, even so, would rather be led by a man themselves. But it's more than that. That Ottoman bastard-she'll show him that she can be every bit a lady, even as she kicks him bodily out of her house. He'll be humiliated to be beaten by a woman, and she'll be more than happy to give him that. And only that.

Her men will just have to get used to it. The Ottomans aren't the only ones she's willing to fight to prove the point. And she'll kick Prussia's ass back to the Baltics if he shows up to make fun of her.

Now she has just has to figure out corsets.
First-Person Sample:I… I don't believe this! Ugh! I know I was saying I'd rather be anywhere but in the Ottoman's bastard's stupid house, but I changed my mind! God, You are great and all that but come on! Magically transport me home, not to this place!

( Hungary kicks something. Takes a deep breath. Then another one. )

Hű… Csá, everyone. I guess I'm here again. How are you? Is there anything I can do to help? If I just sit around, I'll just get angry again. At least this place smells better than Ottoman bastard's house.
