HISTORY: Mukuro's history begins with that of the Estraneo Mafia Family. A Family that would do anything to get to the top, they began to experiment with forbidden techniques and technology, earning themselves the reputation of a "bad" Family amongst the other mafia. Because of this, their entire Family, including children, were generally attacked on sight by other mafia. To combat this, the Estraneo simply did further experiments. They began using the children of their Family as test subjects to create new, powerful fighting methods. Mukuro, then known by his real (unknown) Italian name, was one of these subjects. However, he became too powerful for his captors to handle, and he slaughtered the lot of them. At that point, he decided to take on the personal mission of destroying the mafia and ridding the world of filth via plunging the earth into a world war. Along with him came the two other surviving experiments.

Years later, after causing significant damage to the Mafia, Mukuro had used mind control abilities to force a man named Lancia to kill his entire Family. Lancia took on the Rokudo Mukuro title, and along with the Mukuro's followers was thrown into a maximum security mafia prison. However, they were able to escape, and this is where they entered the main story. Mukuro and his two subordinates, then 15, traveled to Japan with Lancia, where they entered Kokuyou middle school under the fake names of Kabane, Kakimoto Chikusa, & Joushima Ken. Lancia, still wearing the Mukuro name, was used as a front as Mukuro gathered other mafia criminals. During that time, Mukuro's persona became vice president of the student council. In an effort to convert Lancia to his way of thinking, Mukuro manipulated the kind-hearted student council president into becoming arrogant with the power of being able to defeat the delinquents that ruled Kokuyou school. In the end, Lancia wasn't convinced of mankind's inner evil, but Mukuro had killed some time, and was ready to put his plan into action.

The Vongola Family are one of, if not the most influential Family in the mafia world. Mukuro's plan was simple: control the upcoming boss of the Vongola, and use him to destroy the mafia. However, all he knew about the Vongola 10th was that he went to Namimori Middle School. Common sense lead him to believe that a future mafia boss would be among the strongest people at the school, and so he kidnapped the Ranking genius, a young boy by the name of Fuuta. Also using mind control, they got Fuuta to rank the strongest people in the school, and began to attack those people from the bottom up. Although their target proved not to be on the lsit at all, this took out a lot of the school prefects, which ended in angering Hibari Kyouya, the #1 strongest person in Namimori. While Chikusa was dealing with Gokudera Hayato, one of the major "good guys", Hibari ventured to Mukuro's abandoned amusement park base.

Not long after, the real Vongola 10th and his friends appeared to stop Mukuro's assault on the Namimori students. Mukuro's allies fought them and were, one by one, defeated by the new generation of the Vongola. When no one but Lancia and the recovering Chikusa were left to fight, Mukuro allowed Fuuta to draw Tsuna into the woods, where Mukuro met the boy for the first time. He used the personality of Kanabe again then, pretending to be a hostage of Rokudo Mukuro, to have a short conversation with Tsuna during which he attempted to glean further information about Tsuna's allies. He learned about the super-hitman baby Reborn being part of the team, but that was all he managed to get before Tsuna took his leave and went back to his team to face the fake Rokudo Mukuro, Lancia.

Lancia was of course defeated, and at that time the Vongola made their way into the building Mukuro used as his command center. with Yamamoto left behind to recover outside, Gokudera was pressured into staying behind alone to take on Ken & Chikusa. Although at first it seemed that he'd lose, a bird led him to discovering the imprisoned Hibari, who he set loose to take care of his opponents single-handedly, despite his injuries.

Meanwhile, Tsuna, Reborn, and Bianchi faced the real Rokudo Mukuro. The mind-controlled Fuuta was forced to attack Bianchi, taking her effectively out of the battle right at the beginning. Then, it was Tsuna vs Mukuro. Mukuro revealed his abilities at this point - the memories of experiencing all 6 planes of Buddhist existance, and an eye that contains an ability from each one. He would have defeated Tsuna with illusions and the summoning of poisonous snakes, but it was then that Gokudera & Hibari appeared. Mukuro attempted to use sakura illusions on Hibari again, but he'd been given the treatment for his disease by Gokudera, and Mukuro was quickly knocked flat by a technically unconscious but very stubborn Hibari.

It seemed like it was over, but it was that that moment that Mukuro's real plan shone through. In what seemed like an attempt to avoid capture, Mukuro took a gun to his own head, and fired, much to the horror of the watching Vongola. However, Bianchi was the next to get up, and she did so with Mukuro's signature laugh of "kufufu". The bullet Mukuro hd fired was the item that had made the Estraneo Family hated int he first place: the possession bullet. Someone with a loose enough connection to their own body is able to sever that connection entirely and possess the bodies of other people. Mukuro uses wounds caused by his trident as his focus, and therefore any living thing that has been even knicked with that weapon is fair game to his possession ability. First Bianchi, then Gokudera, and even Hibari were possessed as Mukuro attempted to wound Tsuna. Though Hibari's body was unable to fight, Ken & Chikusa's were, so along with the other two Mukuro had four people and the skills of all of them under his direct control. After a tough battle, whoever, Tsuna gained a new ability and Mukuro was defeated.

Upon their defeat, the surviving members of Mukuro's team were all captured by the Vendiche, the ultimate in mafia punishment. The Vendiche jail is said to be impossible to break out from, and only the worst criminals untriable by even mafia law are taken there. Mukuro and his friends were, by now, that level, and they were hauled off by large chains and collars to be placed in that prison. However, It was only a matter of time before he, Ken, & Chikusa escaped again. Unfortunately for them though, the vendiche security was too tough. Mukuro ordered them to split up, and once he was away from their sight, Mukuro gave up the run. He sacrificed his freedom for theirs, and was placed under even tighter security, from which he truly couldn't escape.

Of course, imprisoning the body is never enough with Rokudo Mukuro. While walking through illusions of his mind, he came into contact with the mind of a mortally injured young girl named Nagi. A contract was made, in which Mukuro's powerful illusions would stand for the inner organs actually crushed inside of her, and in return Nagi's body would become the vessel for Mukuro's existence. Her name was changed to Chrome Dokuro, and she became Mukuro's closest follower. Soon afterwards, there was a vital split in the Vongola, and the non-mafia Outside Advisor came to Mukuro with a contact of another kind - become one of the guardians of the Vongola 10th, and Ken & Chikusa would be pardoned of their crimes. Though he would have been wary of such a deal in itself, it would give him the ability to get close to Sawada Tsunayoshi, and so he agreed to serve, through Chrome, as the Vongola Mist Guardian.

The split in the Vongola was caused by on XANXUS, adopted son of the Vongola 9th, who was determined that he himself would be 10th rather than Tsuna. He gathered his own set of guardians from the elite assassin squad he led, the Varia, and challenged Tsuna and his own guardians to a battle over the rings that signified power in the Vongola family. This eventually pitted Chrome against the rival mist guardian, another powerful baby called Mammon, or Viper. When Chrome's trident was broken, Mukuro's control over his vital organs was destroyed and she collapsed. Everyone thought her dead, until he body was engulfed in smoke, and from the smoke came Rokudo Mukuro. He easily dispatched his rival, and won their ring battle. In the final ring battle Mukuro left Chrome on her own, and in fact he didn't appear again for a long time.

Later, the Vongola were transported nearly 10 months into the future, one by one. There, it's revealed that Mukuro had continued to work for the Vongola for all that time. When they arrived, he had already fought one of the highest ranking soldiers of the enemy Family, Glo Xinia. He deliberately lost that battle, and in doing so gained possession of Glo's "box animal" weapon, an owl created from the Dying Will Flame. Using the owl, he helped the newly arrived Chrome defeat Glo, by fighting as her illusion of his younger self.

In this time, he had also gained another contract with a man called Guido Greco, and using the name of Leonardo Lippi had become one of the enemy, Byakuran's closest subordinates. However, Byakuran was aware from the very beginning that Leonardo was really Mukuro, and Mukuro was aware that Byakuran had caught him, and so they maintained a delicate balance of pretending to be oblivious for quite awhile. Eventually, however, the balance was broken and Mukuro faced off against Byakuran. It was another deliberate loss, with Mukuro intending to escape with information about Byakuran's abilities. But Byakuran had made the room impervious to anything coming in or leaving, including thoughts and spirits. Mukuro was trapped in the body of Guido Greco, and was "killed" by Byakuran. However, after the Vongola raid of the Millefiore's Melone Base it was shown that Mukuro's body in the Vendice prison was not listed as dead, and therefore his fate was unknown.

10 days later, the Vongola lost their game of Choice vs Byakuran. A turn of event involving the secondary Millefiore boss, Uni, led to the Vongola being able to run away with their rings and the arcobaleno pacifiers, but they were pursued. It was then that Mukuro appeared again, in illusory form, to hold off Byakuran long enough for them to escape. His reasoning was, of course, that it just wouldn't do for anyone other than himself to take over the world. Mukuro revealed that he had already made his first move, though he didn't explain what it was. When his illusion was defeated, he disappeared again. For our purposes, upon returning to his body Mukuro found it to be in a train and in possession of a flier describing a vacation. Colour him confused.

PERSONALITY: Given his backstory, it's not surprising that Mukuro is a cynical, bitter person. He believes with the entirely of his being that people are bad deep down, and that it's just a matter of effort to make anyone become exactly what they profess to hate. Because of this, Mukuro sees people only as toys or enemies or both. Strangely, hwoever, he is willing to sacrifice himself for Ken & Chikusa, and most likely he would do the same for Chrome, showing that though he doesn't suspend his judgement on them or on himself, he does feel affection for those he is close to. This doesn't stop him from assuming that even they are bad people, however, and the world he intend to build, clean of darkness, has no room in it for himself or his allies. He's perfectly aware of this, but places no particular value on his own well-being, so he's fine with it.

The confusing thing about Mukuro, though, is how he treats the Vongola. During the ring battle, Tsuna sees Mukuro sacrificing himself for his friends, and begins to doubt that Mukuro is as bad as even he himself thinks he is. Doubtless, in 10 years he had to have had the opportunity to wound Tsuna many times, and he has most certainly had it with Chrome, but since Tsuna showed him compassion he's done nothing but talk about his supposed plans. It seems almost as though he still truly believes that he intends to destroy the world as it is, but he keeps working with the Vongola in defiance of those apparent goals. Whether his bitterness or his deep-down capacity for kindness will win out in the end has yet to be seen, so for now it's likely to remain in the strange balance that is Mukuro's personality.

SAMPLE
The retreat back to his real body was always a little disheartening. After ten years, the setting had gotten even more boring than it had been in the beginning, and the tubes attached to his body had ceased to hurt and had instead gone numb, almost like a part of his body he couldn't feel. They'd leave more scars in the lacework of medical lines on his skin, of course, but considering that it was unlikely he'd ever be showing off skin it didn't particularly matter. That was assuming he got free of his priosn tank at all, of course, but he had people working on that. Soon enough, he'd be free to continue on his path to a new world order. Someplace where the filth of humanity would no longer exist. Except himself, of course, though he knew that he had no real place in his planned world. As a ruler, yes... but then the filth wouldn't really be gone, would it? He was part of it by now, of course.

But regardless, for the time beging he had to wait. Mukuro felt the familiar sensation of his mind and spirit settling into his own body, and began to relax for what might be a bit of sleep. Then then it hit him -- the tubes were gone, the water was gone, he was breathing clean air, and that was entirely unexpected. His eyes shot open as he bolted upright in his seat, expecting some new prison or, perhaps on the off-chance, the faces of his subordinates. But no, it was simply... the inside of a train car? How odd. The train seemed strangely empty except for himself, still clothed in his prison uniform, and on the seat beside him lay a postcard.

Out of curiosity, he picked up what he assumed to have been left behind by a previous passenger, only to see it addressed to himself. How odd, he mused, reading the printed ad for a vacation in a city he'd never heard of. He didn't remember accepting a vacation. And who on Earth would send him on one? He had things to do, and anyone but his own men would surely have been apalled at the idea of letting a man like himself loose on the world. Nevertheless, he was on a train, so he had to be going somewhere. But where? Well... he'd find out when the train stopped, now wouldn't he? Yes, and for now it would simply be best to look out the window and see if he spotted any clues. Perhaps soon he'd explore the train, but in the meantime, he felt a strange urge to take that nap he'd been considering.
