I just re-watched Northanger Abbey (I'd already watched it a bunch of times, but not in the past few months), and it is most definitely my favorite Austen adaptation ever. I think if I had to rate my favorite Austen movies, they would go:
-Northanger Abbey (ITV version)
-Sense and Sensibility (Emma Thompson/Ang Lee version...the first Austen movie I ever watched!)
-Pride and Prejudice (Colin Firth/Jennifer Ehle mini-series)
-Persuasion (Amanda Root/Cirian Hinds movie)
-Emma (Gwenyth Paltrow/Jeremy Northam movie)
Mansfield Park does not rate, lol. I haven't seen the ITV version yet (mostly because I hate what's-her-name who plays Fanny...the girl from Doctor Who...oh, Billie Piper! Her.), but I doubt it'll make the list. Also not on the list is the movie version of Pride and Prejudice, which I pretty much despise except for Rosamund Pike's Jane. And I'm not super-crazy about the Kate Beckinsdale version of Emma. It wasn't nearly as bad as Northanger Abbey, but still doesn't make the list.
But, the purpose of this post! The Jane Austen Season starts tomorrow night on PBS. If you haven't heard about it, they're running adaptations of all six Austen novels - four new versions (that is, new to the US) - Persuasion, Northanger Abbey, Mansfield Park and Sense and Sensibility - plus the Kate Beckinsdale Emma and the Colin Firth/Jennifer Ehle Pride and Prejudice mini-series.
It premiers tomorrow with the new Persuasion, which I've seen and liked, although it didn't make the list, either. Northanger Abbey is the next one, on January 20. So, if you like this sort of thing, watch it! I personally am seriously excited, even though I've seen all the adaptations except for the Sense and Sensibility (which I believe is just airing now on the BBC) and Mansfield Park ones.
