Character Name: Terra
Series: Kingdom Hearts (Birth by Sleep)
Gender: Male
Age: Late Teens/Early 20s
Species: Human
Appearance: Terra is a young man of average height and a lean, muscular build. He has dark brown hair that is spiked up in the middle and frames his face with longer bangs on the sides, the hair falls to about the base of his neck. His eyes are a piercing dark blue and his skin isn't too dark but probably shows that he does go outside a lot. He is typically seen wearing khaki colored hakama-style pants, a black skin-tight top, red straps crossing his chest, and a thick belt with a special crest on it. Perhaps his most noticeable accessory is the armor he wears on his left arm which covers his entire arm going up from his hand to his shoulder. It is gold, black, and brown/red in color.
Personality: On the outside Terra generally appears to be calm, cool, and collected. Deep down, however, he is a very passionate individual who would go to any lengths for his friends. While he seeks to become stronger and more powerful for their sakes he is also constantly tempted by the darkness as that offers it's own power. However, this also causes some internal conflict as he has always been raised to believe that darkness is bad and corrupting.
Despite this, Terra is really a kind person who only seeks to help those in need and protect the weak. He is a little too trusting for his own good and despite his age a little too gullible. This probably comes from being raised in a slightly sheltered environment by a man who is very pure-hearted himself. Terra has never encountered evil people prior to leaving his home and doesn't know how to tell when he is being manipulated because he is so innocent and sheltered. He is quick to help without thinking about what the consequences might be or if the person he is helping deserves it or not and in that regard Terra is very selfless...even if it DOES get him into heaps of trouble.
Eventually he learns from his mistakes but never soon enough to prevent bad things from happening and this causes Terra no end of grief as he is very hard on himself personally. While Terra can be realistic he is also a dreamer and possibly even an optimist. As I said he tries to see the best in people and thinks that dreams are possible to obtain (with a little hard work of course). You do NOT want to threaten his friends thought because that tends to piss him off to know end and is probably one of the few things that brings out true rage in Terra. Most of the time though he is pretty laid back and just wants to be with his friends and maybe have a bit of fun.
History: Terra has lived in the Land of Departure for as long as he can remember. There he grew up training with Aqua and later Ven to become a keyblade Master. This was done under the guidance of Master Eraqus. On the day of the exam Terra accidentally lets his control of the Darkness slip and is told he has failed to qualify for the Mark of Mastery. Upset by this turn of events, especially since Aqua passed, Terra wanders off to brood only to run into Master Xehanort who tells him that he doesn't need to suppress the darkness but harness it. Terra is grateful for this advice but is soon called back to the hall by Master Eraqus who senses danger for the Princesses of Light. He assigns Terra and Aqua the task of traveling the worlds and investigating the matter. He also tells Terra that this would be a good chance to redeem himself and gain the mark of Mastery. After some parting words with Ven, Terra blasts off into the Lanes Between and heads for other worlds.
He visits several worlds in his journey and each one seems to take him closer to the darkness. Terra encounters such figures as Maleficent and the Evil Queen. Both women manipulate Terra for his helpfulness and play towards the darker side of him, Maleficent going so far as to actually make him her puppet to take Princess Aurora's heart. These events cause him nothing but distress as he realizes, only after the fact, what poor choices he is making.
He does do one good deed by helping one young maiden, Cinderella, out by escorting her to the Prince's ball. It is there that he learns of the Boy in the Mask who can apparently control Unversed and that Ven has runaway from home.
After visiting three worlds, Terra feels it is time to visit Yen Sid who might know something of Xehanort's whereabouts. Terra doesn't learn much from Yen Sid, only that the Masked Boy and Xehanort might be connected. When he leaves, he hears Xehanort calling to him and travels to a mysterious place known only as the Bad Lands. Xehanort confesses that he made the Masked Boy, Vanitas, and his connection to Ventus. Xehanort uses Terra's sympathetic nature against him by making him think it was all an accident. The conversation seems to trigger a sort of vision for Terra who isn't quite sure what to make of all this. Xehanort asks for Terra's help and hints that Vanitas might be in Radiant Garden next.
Again Terra sets off, this time for the world of Radiant Garden which teems with light. Unfortunately the Unversed are there in large numbers and sizes. Terra follows a rather big one through the town and is eventually lead back to his friends: Aqua and Ven who were also chasing similar Unversed. They team up and destroy the thing and Ven rewards them with lifetime passes to Disney Town. Unfortunately the reunion is cut short as Terra, Aqua, and Ven realize they have different ideas about what they need to do next. Terra gets upset and splits from the pair to go on his own. On his way out the door he runs into a mysterious stranger who says he's taken Xehanort prisoner. Terra confronts the individual and ends up dueling him. Just as Terra is looking bad in the fight, the imprisoned Xehanort snaps him out of it and tells him to fight back no matter the cost. He argues that Terra would bring shame to his Master and his friends if he lost. This is enough to trigger Terra's anger and he once again loses control over the power of darkness. He goes so far as to shoot out the stranger's eye with a blast of it. Once he realizes what he's done he sees himself as a failure but Xehanort is there with kind words to make Terra see it differently and further bring him to the "dark side." Xehanort offers not only to make him a pupil but also a Master, playing up on Terra's one greatest desire.
Terra parts ways with Xehanort and visits more worlds. This time he is seeking strength for himself and trying not to think about his supposedly ruined relationship with Aqua, Ven, and his former Master. He continues his journey of morality by heading to the Olympus Coliseum. There he meets a young Hercules and rescues him from the Unversed. He enters the Games to find out how strong he really is and runs into Hades, Lord of the Dead, in the process. Hades wants to join in on the 'let's manipulate Terra' game the villains seem to be playing these days. Hades, of course, makes Terra an offer that involves entering the games and conquering the darkness. And, as you may have guessed, things go horribly wrong. Terra is forced to confront a darkness possessed Zack controlled by Hades and ends up saving him. Terra also ends up being abducted by aliens in Deep Space and there he meets Experiment 626. At first distressed by the idea that 626 will destroy his Wayfinder (which 626 steals upon meeting Terra) he instead ends up teaching the experiment about friendship and potentially plants the seeds for 626's change of heart.
After visiting another world where he is tricked, again, into helping a pirate Captain guard treasure from Peter Pan under false pretenses. Terra finds himself drawn to a warm light in the middle of the Lanes Between. Following the light he arrives on Destiny Island, confused as to what he's supposed to do now. While contemplating this, Terra encounters a young Riku who sees right through Terra as a traveler from other worlds. After a brief conversation and another strange vision of the future, Terra decides that Riku should be made his successor. Riku has reminded Terra that he still has things he needs to protect and given him renewed faith.
Xehanort once again summons Terra and warns him that Ven may be in trouble with Eraqus. It appears true when Terra returns home only to find Eraqus pulling a keyblade on Ven and threatening to destroy the boy. Terra intervenes and throws Ven into a portal and decides to use the power of Darkness to fight Eraqus for Ven. Things get out of hand though as Eraqus is left near death after the fight. Terra realizes his mistake but it is too late as Xehanort deals the finishing blow and erases Eraqus from existence. Terra breaks down into tears at the loss of his Master. Xehanort scoffs at Terra and decides he needs to push Terra over the edge into darkness by destroying his home and also threatening to destroy his friends as well.
Terra leaves his dying world behind to go save Aqua and Ven. He winds up at the Keyblade Graveyard where he again finds his friends. Aqua confronts Terra about his actions and Eraqus's death but little can be said at their reunion before Xehanort and Vanitas show up. They engage in a large battle over the wasteland. When Vanitas is ordered to go after Aqua and Ven instead, Terra tries to go after him but is stopped by Xehanort. Terra swears revenge and fuels the darkness inside him with rage and hate for Xehanort and what he has done to his family. After a difficult battle, Terra forces Xehanort to exhaustion...just before the x-blade is forged and Terra realizes that Ven is in trouble. Xehanort, meanwhile, sets up the final stage of his plan: freeing his heart from his old body so that he can take over Terra's.
As Xehanort is revealing his plan to Terra, Terra starts to feel a strange sensation that leaves him dizzy and with a headache. Not understanding what it is he notices Xehanort about to possesses him and tries to defend himself against it. Just as he closes his eyes and thinks it over Terra finds himself under a large metal bean.
Supernatural Abilities:
Keyblade summoning- Terra is the wielder of a weapon known as the keyblade. While I'll get more into the specifics of the keyblade's power under 'possessions' I can say that Terra's ability to summon it is his own. He can call it to his hand with a mere thought and dismiss it the same way. Unfortunately for him in Chicago it will not be as easy as it once was. Summoning the keyblade takes a strong concentration and some actual time now, especially depending on Terra's own health. If he is strong it can usually come to hand in about 5-10 seconds. However, if he is particularly weak it could come after a few minutes or possibly not at all.
Basic Magic- Terra is able to perform a variety of magic spells with the aid of the keyblade, mostly associated with elemental magics but there are a few other tricks he knows as well. He's not the most powerful mage though and tends to rely more on his strength and swordsmanship to get him through a battle. That being the case, Terra's magic takes a major hit while in Chicago. He can only perform the lowest level spells and generally only a few times a day at best. If he casts too many spells, especially in quick succession he will start to get a headache, drowsy, or possibly even pass out if he does it too much. He'll be okay after some sleep, but it's obviously not a good idea for him to do much casting.
Command Style- When Terra has fought enough enemies he is able to channel his power into a new form or command. It varies based on what magic or fighting tactics he uses but essentially it takes him to a whole new level of power in both strength and magic. However, in Chicago, this is dampened. Terra can still utilize them but the power is only in short bursts and never sticks around for long. It is also MUCH harder to get himself to the second level of command style and could even push him to exhaustion if he were to try and force the style to be active for too long.
Darkness- Terra has the ability to channel powers relating to Darkness. He can't really control it and it generally only appears when he is feeding it with his rage or anger. While it boosts his strength it also manifests as a visible aura of black and purple around his body. In Chicago it will still boost his strength but Terra will find that he can only tap in to the Darkness for short periods of time before it dies out completely. Generally he'll feel noticeably weaker after tapping in to the darkness. On the plus side, while in Chicago, Terra will have to actively concentrate on his inner Darkness to get it to manifest.
Precognition- This ability is based more on evidence in the game than flat out stated. However, Terra has shown two instances where he caught brief glimpses of the future that tended to link to people connected to the keyblade. Since this is a weak ability and rare at best Chicago practically erases all existence of it. If Terra is to have a vision it will probably only manifest as a 'bad feeling' and nothing more.
Natural Abilities: Terra is obviously trained in "sword" combat and exhibits a great deal of natural strength that has nothing to do with powers augmented by the keyblade (I mean have you SEEN those arms?). Terra's endless days of training have also given him high levels of agility and stamina as well. He doesn't tire easily and is very physically fit. While his speed is not as high as Ven's it is certainly nothing to laugh at. Terra can be quick on his feet when he wants to be and obviously has great reflexes. And, of course, while these traits might be above that of a normal human (he does have certain abilities that allow his speed to reach super-human) in Chicago they will only be slightly above that of your average mortal of his build.
Possessions:
Keyblade- The keyblade is a powerful item that is the combination of a sword and a key. It can magically lock and unlock things (doors, hearts, barriers, etc), transform into a bike-mode, open the lanes between, and even change it's shape based on special keychains. However, in Chicago, Terra finds that the Lanes Between are either permanently closed or his keyblade simply doesn't have the power to open them any longer. It can still open doors and barriers but if it is charmed/protected sufficiently enough the Keyblade could have a hard time opening such things.
It's ability to change shape into different keyblades and a bike is hampered as well. The bike-form can no longer 'blast off' or fly as high as it once did. Instead it is forced to more of a hovering, flying only as high as ten feet in the air before starting to become unstable. Also, it's speeds aren't as high either and now it's top speed is reduced to about 80 mph...90 if he really pushes it. The other keyblade forms are also lost to Terra but if he ever gathers new keychains in Chicago they may be accessed again, although with their own costs and effects as well.
Armor- The full body armor Terra wears is stored in a special panel on the piece of armor he wears at all times. The armor can be accessed by pressing this panel in and summoning the armor into 'full-body' mode. It is supposed to protect Terra from the darkness and other things in the lanes between and presumably augments his strength and endurance as well, not to mention acts as normal protection. Sadly, due to the nature of it's summoning, Terra can't access it as easily as he is used to. While he can still press the panel to access the armor it generally takes a minute for it to fully coat his body. Also, the armor can only stay out for short periods of time before disappearing back into the summoning mechanism. This period of time can be shortened based on how much damage it takes. After so many hits the armor will "shatter" and go back into his arm panel.
Wayfinder- The Wayfinder is a memento from Aqua and has special properties that allow Terra to D-link (Dimension Link) with other people. This D-Link acts as a way of summoning the power of someone Terra has bonded with and he can use their power as his own. Chicago's current power block will make it so that the D-Links he has made prior to arriving in the city are inaccessible (unless those people wind up in Chicago as well). Since it is borrowing another person's power Terra must first form a bond with that person. In Chicago this means that he must not only trust that person but they must trust him as well. When he does borrow other people's powers it is only for a short period of time (generally under two minutes) and then he can not access that Link for several hours.
First-person POV journal sample:
Hello. I was told there were other people who communicate on this device. My name is Terra. I would like to know if anyone has seen a dark skinned man with no hair. I have to wonder if maybe he did something to send me here, though I can not imagine why he would do that. I'm just looking for answers.
[Private to Himself]
I was such a fool. Aqua was right, I would go astray again and now look what's happened. I can only hope that Aqua and Ven somehow made it out of that fight safe. They're strong, I have to believe in them...I don't really have anything else.
Third-person POV rp sample:
Things were happening too fast and Terra found himself growing dizzy. Was it from the intense battle that had just ended? Was it trying to comprehend just what Xehanort was telling him? Was it the realization that Ven might be...might be...? He couldn't finish the thought, a combination of not wanting to complete it and his pounding head. What was going on? How had it all come to this. He looked back at Xehanort who was saying something and pointing his own keyblade at his chest. What? No, this couldn't be happening. Terra's eye widened as Xehanort sent his newly freed heart at Terra. Time seemed to slow as Terra brought his hand up to his armor and at the same time closed his eyes against the dizzying sensation overtaking his body. He felt like he was falling and thought, 'This is it. I've failed.'
However, the sensation of the headache and dizzy spell seemed to fade and Terra felt himself still. The only difference now was that he was fully armored (he must have gotten to the activating panel in time) and on his back. His surroundings felt different somehow as well. Terra's eyes fluttered open beneath the mask of his helmet and he was greeted by the sight of a large structure looming over him. He blinked, several thoughts going through his head at once, the foremost being 'What was this and what was going on?' He sat up quickly, hand tightening around his keyblade and using it to push himself up.
It was clear to him that he was on another World now. The eerie blue light of Kingdom Hearts and the desolate plains of the Keyblade Graveyard were replaced by gray clouded sunshine and gray stone and metal buildings. That was obvious to him but what was a mystery was how he had ended up in this place. Had Xehanort done something? Had the fight just been another of his strange, erratic visions? No, he didn't think so...it had been far too real and he could still feel the soreness in his limbs from the fight.
Seeing no immediate threat, Terra dismissed the body armor and keyblade before he took a few cautious steps forward, peering out from the metal structure. There was no Xehanort waiting for him just around the structure but there was also no other presence either. The area was empty and as he moved forward not even Unversed rose to greet him. He was troubled on many levels and stopped to again ponder how he may have gotten here and the events leading up to it. Nothing was making any sense and he felt as though he was missing something. Dropping his hand from his chin, he looked out at the buildings rising up, "There must be people out there who can answer my questions or at least direct me to someone who can." He had to find out if this was somehow Xehanort's doing. If maybe he had misunderstood something about what was happening and instead of being consumed he had been blasted somewhere to further harness his darkness.
Terra's hand clenched into a fist. He could still feel the residual effects of the darkness he had channeled in his rage and anger at Xehanort. The man had manipulated him to no end and just thinking about him made Terra bubble inside with anger he couldn't quite explain. Thankfully, the darkness did not manifest around him, though he half expected it to after he had channeled it in those final moments. Terra dropped his head, he had to stop this. He had told Aqua he would not go astray again and it was looking like she had been right and that he would. What had happened to her and Ven anyway? Were they okay or had Vanitas done his job? Terra shuddered at the thought and he brought his head up again with a renewed determination. First thing was first, he would find his answers and then he would return to that place to find his friends and hopefully he would not be too late.
