Nakamaru. Nakamaru. Nakamaru. Maru-chan...

For those of you who don't know (or are about to find out)....As of late there has been some ruckus over Nakamaru amongst Chinese netizens. Apparently during the latest broadcast of Gatsun (Feb. 18th). Last month? Nakamaru said that he likes Tojo Hideki the most.  Tojo Hideki is historically known -at least in the USA, as a dictator who was took charge of the imperialistic Japan in WII. Including the attack on Pearl Harbor and China.

For more information go here.

Basically my first reaction was shock. (and disbelief) Because lately Nakamaru has been popping up for random reasons and also got 'Friday'ed' about a week ago. Not to mention, it seemed kind of out of character for him.

After surfing the Japanese forums a bit I've come to a few conclusions.... One. Perhaps he actually meant when he said (Hideki Tojo) for whatever-have-you reason. Two. It's possible he said Hideki Tojo but meant to say Tōgō Heihachirō or Isoroku Yamamoto. Three. Japanese schools don't exactly tell history in an unbiased way, if you know what I mean. So maybe he believes that it is reasonable to like Hideki Tojo.

As for me I don't usually trust just any source. That's why, after some digging, I found the audio for Gatsun 02/18/13, posted below.

Here's a reference for the conversation:

10:22-10:26
Koki: Then~ Nakamaru here's your question.
Maru: Yeah.

10:27-10:29
Koki: Who is your favorite historical figure?
Maru: Tojo Hideki!
Koki: Um... *Buzzer*

-But hold on a moment ya'll, let's rewind it back a bit!

10:10-10:16
Koki: Okay how about Sakamoto Ryoma?
Maru: Now, after waiting, I am super conflicted!
Koki: Ah, you're still conflicted (over who to choose)?
Maru: I'm reallllly conflicted right now!

10:17-10:21
Koki: Fine, for now just choose *quicky! (Almost sounds like choose whatever "patto" (*pops* or jumps) into your head)
Maru: I got it. I've decided in the meantime.
Koki: Maybe this is a little wrong... (...continues to back up to 10:22-10:26 translation)

Alright so after hearing the real thing, I think we can rule out the possibility that everyone just heard wrong. Nakamaru definitely said "Tojo Hideki." However after reviewing the conversation I think that since he was rushed it's also possible that he just said the first thing that came to his mind.

In that case it would be entirely reasonable that such a well known figure came to his thoughts first because no one else was coming to mind. Although I didn't translate it, later on Nakamaru chatted on about being interested in generals whereas Koki said he wasn't very inerested in those type of historical figures but rather those involved in the Meiji Restoration. (Sakamoto Ryoma)

Anyways folks what he said is one thing and what we do with what he said it another. It is up to you to form your own opinion about what he said but I don't believe the correct response is to respond in hate. Like, bashing him over this issue. One of the reasons why people don't like Tojo Hideki is because of what he stood for. War. Strife. Elitism. Hatred. (A mastery of strategy?) So if we reciprocate hatred with hatred in response are we really being the bigger person? It's easy to hate people who are hateful, it's hard to love despite hatred.

Personally, as a fan who's watched Nakamaru for sometime, I will choose to believe in him. Even if he meant what he said, I believe that he probably didn't pick him for the not so great reasons above, I don't think he's like that. Probably he understands that what Tojo Hideki did wasn't morally great but I think that psychologically Nakamaru sometimes sees himself as a weak person and therefore someone with a powerful image like Tojo Hideki stood out to him.

So as fans let's keep the faith. M' kay hyphens?
(Btw Maru-chan isn't my bias.)
