WHO: Sanji and Luffy
WHERE: The Going Merry
Sanji spends some one-on-one time with his Captain, giving the two nakama a brief reprieve from other matters. And of course there's always time for dinner.
Preview:
Luffy: "I always think about you guys." Luffy finally smiles at Sanji, flipping his straw hat back onto his head after examining it a few moments.
Sanji: Sanji smiles again at Luffy's commitment to his nakama. But he didn't have to say that, Sanji knows perfectly well how Luffy feels.
There's a wind blowing off the coast of an autumn seasoned island, giving the cook cause to wear a coat today. Sanji is standing on the deck, staring at the sea and thinking to himself. It's still awhile before he has to make the evening meal so that leaves him with a little downtime for idle thoughts. Things have been relatively quiet on the Going Merry for a few weeks with everyone off exploring on their own. Even Sanji has been away through the gates, meeting new people and seeing new things, though he's been particularly occupied with a search for Robin who still remains to be found. *sigh*
Just thinking about her out there on her own.. it breaks his overflowing heart! "Robin-chwaaaaan!!" His voice rings out over the coast of the entire island. "Where are yooou!!" Come back, my mature beauty! ;_; Sanji hangs his head in dispair. Well, maybe he can find something to preoccupy him for awhile.
Luffy is good at giving things to preoccupy people. When he leaps up onto the ship after finally finding it, he immediately spies Sanji. He figures everyone else is still out and about, exploring, and he half-opens his mouth to announce to Sanji his arrival and that he wants MEAT!.. but then he sees the look on Sanji's face, and merely strolls over.
"Hey, Sanji." Luffy grins at his chef, moving to sit on the railing of the Going Merry. He doesn't say anything else, since he knows if the chef wants to be alone, he can say it. He may be captain, but that doesn't stop people from getting their way on the Going Merry!
There's a blink and the blonde cook lifts his head, still slightly hunched as he looks up at the Captain who's just returned and made himself at home on the railing of the ship. At first Sanji just stares at him. What, no demand for meat? Don't worry, he gets it. "Tch, did you get lost?" He'll bet Luffy has been wandering around someplace for awhile now, just trying to find his way back. Then again, this isn't Zoro we're talking about.
"I've been having the best time and meeting the cutest girls while you were gone." As if Luffy cares about that though. But granted, his times would be better if he knew his nakama were all around safe and sound. Sanji turns to lean against the railing next to Luffy, tucking his hands into the pockets of his autumn coat. In other words, he isn't entirely depressed or anything! It's just not really his style.
Luffy wouldn't admit it, but yes, he's been lost for the past couple hours.. but unlike Zoro, he has some semblance of direction. Kinda. But it can't be any worse than Zoro's! "Nope." He grins at his chef, then tilts his head a bit to the side. "I saw Nami." He mentions, plucking the straw hat off the top of his head. "Are you thinking about Robin?" He adds in quickly. He's not telepathic, but he knows alot of his nakama worry about the others just as much, especially when the whereabouts of one of their own is up in the air.
Plus, this is Sanji. If he's thinking about anyone, it's definetely Nami and Robin.
Sanji makes it his business to look after the girls on the crew. It's part of who he is, to watch after a lady. The mention of Nami does get him to blink and look over at the captain while the wind stirs his hair a little. "Nami?" There's a faint smile. "She's really put out about the gates. Doesn't even like to go out there." Not that he can blame her, it can be pretty weird sometimes.
As for Robin.. "Of course I'm thinking about Robin!" How could he not? "Aren't you?" And he already knows the answer to that question. Why would Robin come back when she knows Sanji is waiting for her! c_c;
Luffy's a complete opposite of Nami. He loves going out into the gates! So much stuff to see, so much stuff to do, so much food to EAT! "I always think about you guys." Luffy finally smiles at Sanji, flipping his straw hat back onto his head after examining it a few moments. "I want to go find Robin." He nods once, then, nods again a second time, looking over at Sanji. "Did she leave any hints on where she might be?"
Sanji smiles again at Luffy's commitment to his nakama. But he didn't have to say that, Sanji knows perfectly well how Luffy feels. "You know Robin." She could leave without anyone even noticing until she was long gone. That's the way that woman is. Maybe he's over worried for nothing, the way Nami thinks, but Sanji doesn't believe in over worried. "I've just been wandering around everywhere asking about her." But no leads yet. If there's a woman to be found though Sanji's sure to find her.
But maybe he should talk about other things instead. Not as if they don't already think about Robin enough. "While I was out looking I met this cute girl who got me to join a relief society. It helps people in need." Naturally Sanji volunteered to do some cooking for them. "They're nice people. Oh, and I met your opponent for that fight contest you're in."
Luffy tilts his head at Sanji, listening to him talk with a nod and a grin. "Yeah. Ranma? I heard I was supposed to fight him for third place." He says thoughtfully. "I still keep forgetting about that, but I've never met him, and no-one's said anything to me." He shrugs his shoulders helplessly, but doesn't seem all that worried. "I've met a few people from the Relief Society. One of them is a bounty hunter with a cool metal suit." He grins. If only Sanji knew what was cooped up on the inside of that varia suit!
Sanji reaches into his coat for a cigarette and puts it between his teeth, pinching it there as he also brings out his lighter. He grins around the stick as he looks to Luffy. "Third place?" That's it? He really thought Luffy would've done better than that! "I'd hate to run into first and second." They must be pretty formidable if Luffy couldn't beat them in an organized match. "I wanted to test Ranma out for you." He suggested a sparring match anyway. "But didn't have the chance." Ranma was more distracted by food, which Sanji found to be pretty funny.
Luffy shrugs his shoulders again. "One of them could make my blood run backward." He puts a hand to his forehead and then runs it back to his neck, scratching it. "I've felt alot of pain fighting people since I started with Zoro, but nothing worse than that. Think I'd rather take an impact dial." He grins. Thankfully, Chopper was able to fix him up. "Well, we'll just have to see how Ranma fights later." He smiles, watching the chef light his cigarette.
Sanji gets a sobering look when Luffy describes his opponent that way. "Geez." Must've been something else. No wonder Nami is afraid to go outside the gates.. well she won't admit to being afraid but Sanji thinks she might be. There are things out there which they may not even be able to handle. Not right now anyway. When Luffy dismisses the idea of running off to the fight, even if Sanji knows where his opponent is, the cook smiles to himself and lights his cigarette. It's nice to spend time with nakama once in awhile. It's just too bad the others aren't around to enjoy it to.
"Well!" He says, lifting his hand and trying to pat Luffy on top of his hat a few times, then giving his head a light shove. "I guess you're hungry." He's surprised Luffy hasn't even mentioned it yet! "What do you want to eat?" As if he didn't know.
Luffy hasn't mentioned his hunger yet because, like Sanji, he enjoys spending time with nakama. He gets plenty of time to spend with them as a group, but very few times he actually gets to spend some one-on-one time with them! "Meat." He grins at the shove, and slips down off the railing onto the deck of the Going Merry. What, did you think he was going to ask for vegetables?!
"Are you sure you don't want a salad?" Yeah that was a joke, and a pretty funny one he thinks! It's true that they don't spend time one on one with each other much unless they're going into town for something. It's a nice way to spend the day. "Alright, but if you think you can keep from breaking something you can actually help for a change." This might be asking for disaster, but they are spending time together, right? Luffy is being invited into Sanji's kitchen.. this is a rare and momentous occasion! And Sanji proceeds to the kitchen by reaching to try and put Luffy in a headlock, then drag the captain after him. Of course, he may end up just taking Luffy's head while the rest follows at its own pace.
"Woohoo!" Luffy cheers, but then gets trapped in a headlock and.. dragged into the kitchen. Ack. "I'll try my best, Sanji!" He gives a thumbs-up and one of those ear-to-ear grins. Indeed, his body catches up slower than might be expected, but once inside the kitchen, Luffy makes his way to a stand. "So, what're we going to make?" He glances over at Sanji. It makes one wonder who cooked the food before Sanji came around. Hmm..
Sanji doesn't even want to imagine what they were eating before he got on board the Going Merry. Nothing too healthy he's sure. Without him they probably would've all died of malnutrition by now. "Let's see..." First he has to see exactly what's left in the fridge to begin with. Sanji just never knows what'll be in there after a midnight snack raid has gone on. The door of the fridge is opened for the chef to peer inside, then then brings out a slab of meat that'll do for a meal. Hm, he'll put that into the oven, but first it has to be seasoned right. "Here, take this." The plate of meat is offered to Luffy. "It's not cooked." So don't try eating it yet! "I'll get the spices."
It's a good thing Sanji tells him not to eat it yet, because he's nearly got it in his mouth by the time he mentions it's not even cooked. He sets the meat back down onto the plate and grins sheepishly, rubbing the back of his head. He just lets Sanji do his thing - he has no idea where the spices are, himself, and so, yes, the crew probably would've died from malnutrition by now if Sanji wasn't there! Or scurvy. Or something.
Sanji blows some smoke out and brings the spices down from the rack, then takes a basket of potatoes out from a low cabinet. "You think you can peel potatoes?" He wonders if Luffy can manage to do it without taking everything off with the skin. He takes one out of the basket and tosses it into the air a few times, catching it with one hand, then holding it out. "Try not to waste any of it." The basket is handed over, but he turns around quickly to add. "And don't eat them!" Sanji wouldn't be surprised if Luffy had the basket half way to his mouth before he added that. The process of seasoning the meat is something that requires a more delicate touch, so he'll do that himself.
"I'll try." Hey, Luffy's determined to help out any way he can! He takes the basket and indeed, has it halfway to his mouth before Sanji tells him not to eat it. This causes Luffy to have a frustrated look on his face before he sits down and begins to peel the potatoes. Amazingly, Luffy manages to peel them just fine. Perhaps not perfectly, but it's definetely not any worse than anyone else might have done. Of course, when Sanji isn't looking, he tries to sneak a nibble of the potatoes..
Sanji takes the spices to begin seasoning the meat carefully. Not that Luffy may even noticed when he gobbles it up in one bite, but that doesn't mean Sanji would take any less care than he would with any other meal. It doesn't matter who the customer is, he has to give the food the utmost respect. Of course, he knows just when Luffy is trying to sneak a nibble and lifts his left shoe to extend a bop toward the side of Luffy's head. "I said don't eat them! There'll be nothing left for dinner!" But he's pretty impressed that Luffy is trying so hard to help without devouring everything in sight. Once the meat is done he puts it on a metal tray that'll go into the oven, then starts putting the potatoes around it.
"Sorry Sanji." Luffy grins and drops the potato, and finishes the last potato he'd left unpeeled before attempting to sneak a nibble, then Sanji takes 'em. He hasn't devoured everything in sight, but it's not for lack of trying! It's then he stands and moves to watch Sanji cook. It's always fun to watch the chef do anything with food. It's like dinner entertainment!
Even if Luffy isn't a vegetable man, Sanji gets some from the crisper to chop and add to the meal surrounding the meat. At least for flavor. It can be pretty entertaining watching him cook. He's good with the knives, able to slice and dice everything and add it to the meal in ten seconds flat. With a crew that eats like this one he has to cook fast! A quick sauce is thrown together for additional flavor for the meat and everything goes straight into the oven. It'll be done in no time! Things just cook faster around here for some reason. "We should have a big dinner at the end of the month with everyone." There's a holiday coming up, from what he understands. A big meal right on the deck! It'd be a lot of fun. "Maybe have some games or something." Just so he can beat Zoro in all of them.
"That'd be fun!" Luffy nods. Plus, it's always fun when the whole crew gets together for some partying! He leans back against the wall near the oven to stare at it, as if it was going to serve him the meat any minute now.. grow legs and everything! "How about we plan it as a surprise?" He grins.
Sanji turns to lean against the counter and cross his arms over his chest a moment. There's an instant grin around the cigarette at the suggestion of making the dinner a surprise. "Good idea!" He thinks it'll brighten everyone's moods. "I'll have to do some serious shopping." But just the idea of it seems to put the cook in an even better mood. Of course, he'll have to spend money somehow without Nami being aware if it's a surprise, but Sanji is sure he can get a lot on a good budget. Though if they stock up on booze or sake it'll cost more. A curly brow quirks as he looks to the fridge, then toes the door open to peer inside. "Hmf, stupid marimo." Sanji reaches inside for a bottle of Zoro's sake, whether he's marked it or not, and pulls the cork off with his teeth. If it's in his fridge it belongs to him! Besides he wants to drink something with dinner, which'll be done any minute now.
Luffy nods with a grin and looks away from the oven towards Sanji. "I heard there was some sort of treasure on this island." He says after a moment with a few nods. "I was going to go look for it, but I got lost. They say it's up in the mountains, though. Maybe we should go look for it, then we can get tons of food!" Nodnod.
*ding!* That's the oven! Sanji puts the sake bottle down to grab his mits and bring the food out, then carry the tray right over to the table. No need for a formal setting with just the two of them. And he knows it may end up a fight just for servings anyway. "A treasure?" Sanji responds once the food is down. "That's perfect!" They can get the money without having to borrow any from Nami, though Nami will probably be unhappy to find out they went treasure hunting without her. But it's for a good cause. "What do you wanna drink?" Sanji is drinking Zoro's stash just to bug him.
"Water." Luffy grins. He'll save the sake for Thanksgiving! He sits down across from the chef and nods a few times. "I heard alot of rumors about treasure. We could go up there and find it." Of course, they usually have this knack for finding treasure or places that aren't supposed to be found. "It looks great, Sanji!" He grins at the food, and nabs a fork and knife. Mmm.. if Sanji weren't there to hold him back, he'd probably eat the whole thing..
Sanji nods and goes to get a chilled pitcher of water out of the fridge to pour Luffy a glass and bring it over, then set the pitcher down next to it. There's a slight smirk at the look on Luffy's face, like he wants to gobble every bite up for himself. "Don't hold back, Luffy. You helped me cook it." So he doesn't mind if Luffy doesn't leave him anything. Not as if he can't make more just as quickly. He's going to have to later anyway for the rest of the crew. This isn't nearly enough to feed all of them. "And you have to have your energy for your fight." Maybe if Sanji packs enough meat into him Luffy will have the energy to win. "A pirate king shouldn't come in less than third place."
Luffy wouldn't eat the whole thing! He does dig in, but slowly. He likes to savor it.. bah, who cares? He takes nearly half of the meat once he's cut it up. Chew, chew. "I know, but there're some really tough people out there!" He grins with a mouthful of meat. "I'll win and make third place." He nods, nabbing up one of the potatoes and nibbles on it.
