Brand is teaching a class for fighters over 50 years old at Sport of Kings and asked for input. These were some of my brief thoughts:
My thoughts and recommendations:
Consistency is vital. But rather than train really hard three time a week, for most it would be better to have a hard day of training mixed in with lighter training days. Remember that it takes longer to recover the older one gets.
When cross training or working out, keep in mind those areas where you have injuries or problem areas. Exercises for rehab are usually recommended to help prevent further injuries as well.
Pay attention to your body. Ice those sore muscles. Use good form to prevent injuries. Drink lots of water. Exercise or stretch daily to stay in shape.
Mental energy and focus can also be a problem for some. Don’t think old! Find ways to continue making the fighting fun and exciting. I will frequently add a new piece of equipment just to make things more interesting. (New shield, new surcoat, new helm, etc.).
