Ok, this isn't a rant about any specific incident. It is a list of rules that I strongly feel should be posted on the front door of every retail establishment. I have compiled these rules based on my experiences in various retail jobs, all of which sucked like malnourished musky leeches. I hope you enjoy them as much as I didn't enjoy the incidents that inspired me to write them.
1. Studies show that half of all merchandise returned as "defective" works perfectly fine. So before you become irate, keep in mind that there's a 50-50 chance that the only problem is your own ineptitude.
2. It is extremely unlikely that the employee running the register or stocking the shelves is responsible for determining company policy or setting product prices. Therefore, complaining to this individual about these issues is simply a waste of everyone's time.
3. Do not become cantankerous with the employees of one company over issues you are having with another company's product/service. How would you feel if the police wrote you a ticket because your neighbor was parked illegally?
4. Do not ask someone to violate their company's policies. They would much rather lose you as a customer than lose their job.
5. If you have not read a product's instructions, you have no right to complain about the product.
6. It is not the company's responsibility to keep track of your receipt. That is why it was given to you.
7. Do not hassle an employee because the product/service they sold to you is "too complicated." First of all, it is unlikely that said employee designed said product. Secondly, we all live in a highly technical and complicated world. If you are unable to keep pace with the rest of society, that is no one's problem but your own.
8. Do not presume to give orders to employees unless you are said employees' boss.
9. Dress appropriately before going shopping. While being attired in your Sunday finery isn't necessary, entering a store while wearing pajamas does not inspire a tremendous amount of respect.
10. If you fail to maintain an acceptable minimum standard of personal hygiene, you have no right to be offended when store employees maintain a minimum safe distance from you.
11. If your children are incapable of behaving appropriately, they should not be taken out in public. Retail employees are not paid to baby-sit your unruly offspring.
12. Do not go shopping if you are significantly chemically altered. Your fellow shoppers will not find this amusing, nor will the store employees, nor will the uniformed officers that will be summoned to remove you from the premises.
13. If you cannot fluently speak the language of the country in which you are shopping, it is your responsibility to acquire a translator. It is not the company's responsibility to ensure that all of its employees are multilingual.
14. If you are engaged in a conversation on some manner of wireless device, do not expect to be waited on. The employees are not rudely ignoring you; they are politely refraining from interrupting you.
15. Bear in mind that to the individual on the other side of the counter, the earth-shattering crisis that has ground your entire life to a screeching halt is merely one of hundreds of minor annoyances that this individual is dealing with on this particular day. Therefore, they cannot be expected to display any substantial level of emotional duress over your little problem. The fact that they're working to resolve it should sufficiently satisfy you.
