I've started work full time, at a job that involves 2 hours a day in the car commuting. I hate driving, but I've discovered that listening to an audio book from the library converts "Grrr....." into "That's ok, more time to hear what happens next." The book I'm most of the way though at the moment is The Omnivore's Dilemma. It's a good book (er, CD?), and I recommend it to anyone interested in thinking about the American food industry in all its various incarnations. It's renewed my interest in trying to eat more locally-produced groceries like produce, eggs, and meat. But I find that I don't know much about the subject. I know I don't have the time or energy for a personal garden that's any more ambitious than my current rather-neglected bed of lettuce in the back yard. So I'll be buying it. I'm not sure I'm willing to give up part of my weekend to go to a farmer's market, but there may be ones I could get to after work. There are home delivery options (
Farmhouse Delivery and
Greenling are the two I found on a quick internet search).
Does anyone have experience or recommendations in this area to share? I'm more interested in local / sustainable than just organic, so simply going to Whole Foods doesn't necessarily do me any good. For the meat and eggs, I'd strongly prefer them to be pastured.
