Using a fleece fabric with a print of large pink and red hearts, I just made Red a long wrap-around skirt (it falls just below the knee; I'll try it on her in the morning to position the final button and buttonhole) and a brimless hat. I'l probably make her a scarf too, since there's fabric left. Maybe
mittens as well? She doesn't like her hands to be cold. What a fun use for a yard and a half of cheap fleece! I used 1" wide grosgrain ribbon as an inside waistband on the skirt, since fleece stretches and I didn't want it to come loose at the waist. I'll post photos sometime soon, once everything is finished.
I know it's silly, but I really like the idea of making an outfit with matching accessories. And since she's still little enough to think it's the height of fashion, I'll just run with it. This winter she discovered Fancy Nancy...
I seem to be doing less sewing with patterns these days, and more sewing either by following a tutorial online or (more commonly) just making it up as I go along. I feel like I'm finally starting to "get" it. Of course, it also helps that these aren't very fitted items, and a pre-schooler doesn't have much in the way of curves to contend with.
Edit to add:
Well, the hat was way too small, so now it can go to a stuffed animal. I've made her a new hat. I also made the scarf this morning. Making a fleece scarf means 1) cut a 60" x 6" strip, 2) cut 3" fringe on each end, 3) wrap around child. I also needed to take a couple of darts in at the waist of the skirt, but it should look fine.
And I was wrong about the amount of fleece - the piece is .75 yard. Which explains why now I'm having to be very careful with my piecing for the mittens, since I had to re-do the hat... I had to skimp a bit on the brim of the hat, and it looks too plain now. Maybe I'll do blanket stitch around the edge just to make it look more interesting.
