He didn't make it, saved his wife an agonizing decision. I've learned more, seems one of the kids burned up their life savings somehow and they didn't even have grocery money, let alone rent. He was too old school to accept the "shame" of being on the public teat, he'd been a proud independent rancher all his life. So he just gave up, he saw no way out. Left the wife a pretty good mess. Another one of those situations where there is no black or white, just a morass of gray areas with no easy answers.
