Grocery store encounters

I started petsitting today, which also means I have a car once again! Yay! I launched myself out this morning early and moved my things to my housesitting job, then to the grocery store in search of rutabagas for Thanksgiving. I was lucky enough to borrow a car on Sunday and got sweet potatoes then, while they were on sale. I got some rutabagas at Nob Hill, but they didn't have as many as I'd hoped for in good condition. Since I had to go over to Pleasanton and Dublin, I thought I'd stop by Gene's Foods on the way home and also look there for more.

Gene's Foods is a very nice grocery store indeed, more fancy than I usually visit. I think it is a solo market, and not part of a chain, but it is very gourmet and upscale. They have lovely vegetables and fruit. I stop there once in awhile if I'm in the area. They have one or two things I like which I can't find elsewhere, but they are often more expensive than other stores so I don't do all of my shopping there. But sometimes it's fun to walk around and look at Gene's, even if I don't buy much.

Today I found the rutabagas and I wished I'd bought all of them at Gene's because they were absolutely gorgeous and...cheaper than Nob Hill! Amazing. I had this fun encounter by the rutabagas. Standing next to me was this nice woman on her cell phone, with a lovely British accent, having a very in-depth conversation about root vegetables. It turned out she was trying to figure out which was which. She was getting ready to make a recipe from a British cookbook for Thanksgiving, and she was searching hard for one veggie on the list. It was rutabagas, but in Britain they call them Swedes. She was about to leave the store because of course she couldn't find "Swedes" anywhere, as we don't call them by that name! She was laughing so sweetly when she realized they were rutabagas. I just knew I had to post this for Carol, as we were just having this conversation by email a week or two ago about the different names for rutabagas.

Now I have my veggies in hand for Thanksgiving and I'm all ready to go. Yippity skippities!

hugs,
Erin
