music notes

In my previous post, I mentioned that Ben Kweller had a new cd out, and I was going to check it out. Well, I did. And I am, for lack of a better word, puzzled by it. He has gone completely country. The amount of slide guitar is almost enough to make me cringe. I know musicians like to evolve their style and all, but I don't see how he went from such a fun, almost classic-rock sound, to the completely country sound that defines every song on the cd. I feel bad saying I was disappointed, but I was.

New artists I've found/been introduced to: Amos Lee, Cat Power, and Steven Malkmus and the Jicks. I found Amos Lee on an episode of House. His music is like soul and blues and folk and his voice is amazing. He is great for morning drives. He almost has a Van Morrison type of sound. I really, really like it. I know Jamie would love him, but I don't know if he can get on the internet, so I'm thinking of mailing him a cd. He should be home in May anyway!

Cat Power and Steven Malkmus came from a girl at Chris' work who has awesome taste in music and keeps burning him cds, which I promptly burn for myself as well. I like Cat Power because they're girly and play stuff that I could play. And Steven Malkmus is really good at guitar! Christopher also has a solo cd from the lead singer of Modest Mouse. It's pretty strange at times, but what do you expect from Modest Mouse?

I also got ahold of The Who greatest hits and I'm thoroughly enjoying it. I feel lame listening to greatist hits albums, but their discography is way way too huge to go through one my one. I like old music!

I wrote this down because I haven't been listening to any of my own music lately, and I just updated my Zune this weekend and I'm really happy I did.
