Dear Dean: You are what you are, and you do what you do, but tonight you were more than a little bit of a bastard. I'm not impressed. Hubby isn't, either.

P.S.
Otherwise, very pleased to have seen Jensen's 2nd directorial effort! The boy done good. Much to enjoy in this episode. :)

Well ... I am kinda serious. About being displeased with Dean, that is. He's probably right about that gal. She went from non-monsterhood to killing 6 or 7 people in a row - even if for supposedly a good cause. Having so thoroughly breached that no-kill barrier, what's to stop her running into some other, future emergency also requiring her to kill? So, Dean's probably not wrong about that.

What got me, however, was the manner in which he went about it. He flat out lied to Sam about believing him, and not only that, but he jollied Sam along with the, "here, you drive us to Spokane, have the keys to the Impala." Not voicing the rest of his thought, which was, "I'm gonna gank your little friend, just the same, because she's a monster and who cares if she killed her own mother to save your life, because you're a lunatic and life just sucks, anyhow."

My hubby is a pretty tough nut, but even he was put out by Dean's kill-'em-all attitude. He was growling "lighten up, Dean" at the TV even before Dean killed the girl. So ... yeah. I think you're right, it says a lot about Dean's state of mind, and as such, maybe he deserves a little understanding.

I'm just irked that he lied to Sam so baldly, and even had Sam drive him to the stinking hunt! (Which he led Sam to believe was over.) And then he left that woman's kid alive, because hey, he can't kill a kid. But he can kill the one hope that kid had of maybe not becoming a monster, because now the kid knows hate and has a target at which to aim it.

Not Dean's finest moment, I feel. But I know it's a deliberate part of the story and Dean's character arc, so I'm just annoyed at him like I'd be peeved at a family member. ;)

The lying, that's fair. But aren't you just as irritated by Sam sneaking out in the middle of the night? If we're talking trust, here, and lying, then the boys are on a even ground. (We don't know if Dean will tell Sam later - Dean's notoriously bad at keeping sectrets.)
And sorry, my reaction was instinctive, especially after we discussed so thouroughly and from various angles Sam's actions in season 4, you know? I think Dean deserves a lot of understanding. As for the kid I guess I just don't understand why so many people wanted him to kill the kid. Now, that would have made Dean a cold-blooded killer. He didn't kill the kid because the kid hasn't killed. No different than Sam's choice way bak then when he first met Amy.

Oh, I agree re: Sam! When he pulled that, I pretty much ground my teeth. Sam, you idjit, not only are you sneaking off again, but you TOOK YOUR BROTHER'S CAR! Sheezo pete! So, yeah, that was un-cool, to say the least.

And I don't begrudge you your reaction, dear lady! :) Mine was just as instinctive, it simply happened to come out a little differently. ;) I definitely agree Dean deserves understanding. I mean, at this stage of the game, there is nothing - nothing - in this world in which Dean can place his faith. Not man, not God, not angels, not even his friends, since those keep dying off. And Sam? Well, he's dealt with Sam's lapses in good sense, before, and the fact it's beyond Sam's control doesn't make it any easier. I get all that.

And I even get why Dean did what he did. Probably he's not wrong. And NO, good lord I don't think he should have killed that kid!!! No way, no how, never. I just ... felt at a very visceral level that Dean's slaying of that woman, his un-doing of Sam's mercy was not the right thing, and he in fact created a worse thing by orphaning that boy, removing the one buffer that (monster) kid had against growing up ... at least a little less monster-ish. Dean made himself that boy's Yellow-Eyed Demon. Just ... a bad deal all around.

But, what's done is done, and I am anxious to see where Dean's journey will take him. He's in a very bleak and hopeless place, and I do feel for him. I do. I want to see him somehow find faith in himself, if nothing else, and faith in Sam, as well. Poor Dean. He's that close to some edge we can't even imagine...
