It's Really Late

Okay, it's not all that late, but it's really late for me to be awake. I just got back from Rob's Halloween party and I could have stayed up much longer cuz I was having lots of fun, but my parents are coming to visit tomorrow so it seemed like a bad idea. Instead I'm writing a brief post and then hopefully I'll be ready to pass out.

Today I finally went to the MyWaterlooRegion website and read up on the Mayoral and City Council candidates' platforms. It was interesting that most of what they were asked had to do with future development, regional integration, and population growth in Waterloo.

Having read answers to 20 questions from all of our potential mayors, I've decided that I'm going to support Brenda Halloran. Herb Epp sounds quite conservative and really didn't have anything all that interesting to say. Brian Turnbull is admirable on arts and watershed management, but he came off as mostly being in the race because he dislikes Herb Epp. He's the only one that's being very critical. Halloran's not perfect, but she's got a positive message, her answers are respectable from an environmental point of view, and she's the only candidate talking about healthcare. I know this is a provincial matter, but the province isn't going to do anything about bringing doctors to Waterloo and I for one have lived here for 13 years without managing to obtain one.

Based on the candidates discussions, I also learned that the area in front of Waterloo Town Square is now going to be a public square for all of us to enjoy. I hope they do a good job of it - anything is better than a parking lot.

My eyes are starting to hurt and I need to get the spirit gum off of my face, so I'll say goodnight.
