To Click or Not To Click

Oct 13, 2009 17:17

I walked in to work today and this is what happened.

Boss:  My computer says it has a virus.
Me: Ok, let me look at it.  (it's one of those viruses that has anti-virus pop-ups come up)
Yep, this is a virus.  Don't click on these pop-ups, they are from the virus itself.
Boss: Ok
Me: (runs the Malwarebytes program to get rid of it)  Just let me know when this is done running and I'll come take it through the next step.
Boss: OK

2 minutes later

Boss: Ok it's done and I clicked on the next step but it's doing something weird.
Me: ...it takes longer than 2 minutes. Did you click on the pop-ups?
Boss:  Yes.
Me: Don't click on those.  Those are bad.  (proceeds to try to explain the difference between the "good" anti-virus program and the "bad" anti-virus pop-ups.)   Ok, I'm going to run it again, don't click on anything, just let me know when it's done.

5 minutes later

Boss:  Ok, This time I clicked on what you told me to but it all went away.
Me: (looks at the screen)  Um....you closed the program.  (I'm pretty sure that a pop-up window opened and in response, he closed every window on the screen including the program I was running).
Boss: Oh. Well run it again and I won't click on anything.
Me: Ok

5-10 minutes later.

Boss: Ok, it finished and I clicked on something and it's being weird again.
Me: You said you wouldn't click anything!

He had clicked on the virus pop-up again.

Boss: Ok, well I'm going home.

I finally got his computer fixed after he went home.

I should have taken his mouse away and let the program run.

Ok, I gotta get back to writing a paper now.
