I've never been to a RNN meeting, but some of my impression of it (other than some of the people we know) is that it is for the most part populated by people who are financially invested in Riverwest. I would argue this is problematic in of itself. People who can own property are inclined to also be afraid of poor people, many of whom are people of color and are therefore racist toward them due to natural class antagonisms that develop. White people who own property want not to be robbed and to make sure the things they own don't get fucked with, while people who don't own anything and don't want to work (rightfully because it's dehumanizing) will fuck with people who do ( ... )

yeah, my knowledge of the RNA is peripheral at best. Dan Knauss, also the author of the article i mentioned above, runs the RNN website, which i guess is separate from the RNA. he sums his feelings pretty well here. (the latter half of that linked article explains his negative attitudes towards anarchists in the neighborhood. there have been other articles but i can't find them offhand ( ... )

"...one of the articles described the area in question as an "anarchist neighborhood" and i took it to genuinely mean an entire neighborhood in support of anarchist living. i'm not convinced that anarchist beliefs need to be the "unifier" (at least i don't think strangers will hear crimethinc mantras and feel compelled to hang out with all of the young, radical white kids). that sounds harsh but i'm not trying to take the offensive. i think meeting basic needs is an important first step. i've started working more closely with broad vocabulary; we'll see how that goes. i also wanted to start a vegetable garden on one of the empty lots but it doesn't look like that will pan out this year ( ... )

This is a subject i would really like to discuss in a different forum like in person. But I just wanted to put in my 2 cents about dan knauss. I think we were over this around the time of the contested alderman race but that guy is a racist asshole and should peace out of riverwest forever. I find pretty much anything he's written to be inflammatory of my sensibilities. At the same time i just dont understand people who steal from other people. I can understand people not wanting to work within the system and pay taxes and all that shit, but instead of violently robbing from others why dont they work (i dont mean a job either but more like some cooperation)towards some other situation. You know instead of intimdating and taking from other poor people. rant OVER. peace out

The problem is that work is inherently degrading, especially as a poor black person, whereas crime can be seen as somewhat more dignified resistance to this alienation. I would rather have individuals not hurt each other and steal from other people people, but as long as class antagonisms continue to exist so will anti-social crime.
