I left the middle-aged man slumped over and asleep. Quickly, I stuffed my freshly dried and colorful clothing into my laundry bag and hurried out the door. I did this as quietly as I could, as to not wake the man, but I think the rhythmic hum of the washing machines had him in a slumbering trance. I wondered when he awoke if he was going to think of me as being just a passing dream.
He was a solicitor and made an attempt at selling me a subscription to magazines. I politely closed the book I was reading and told him that I was just a broke college student without a job. Thinking that he'd go away to talk to the couple folding their clothes, I reopened my book and continued the sentence I hadn't finished yet. Instead of letting me get back to my reading, the man spoke and told me that he was going to take a break until 4 o'clock; the clock in the laundromat said that it was sometime after two. Great.
Deciding to be friendly, I sparked up a conversation with the man. He was from St. Louis, travels all over America for his job, has a son in college, was to be engaged to a woman named Victoria and was staying in a hotel. After learning all of this information, the solicitor then asked me if I would ever consider dating a brother. I told him that I was not opposed to the idea and then he asked me if I currently had a boyfriend. Me being the unfortunate honest person that I am, I said no. The man asked me if I would consider dating him. I told him no. He then asked me for my phone number. I gave him a false one so he'd leave me alone. He told me he thought that I was beautiful about 10 times and even alluded to the idea that we would one day be wed.
Before dozing off, he asked me if he could call me that night. I told him yes and then he was asleep. Shortly thereafter I noticed that my clothes were finished drying. I looked at the man to make sure he wouldn't awake, quietly gathered my things and was on my way. I practically jogged back to my apartment and did not leave the safe confines of my building for the rest of the night. I did not want to take the chance of running into him again.
