I meant to post an big "weekend update" back at the beginning of the week. But then I got busy….or lazy. Oops. So here is a quick rundown:
The Caps have won their first three games. They haven’t done that since the 2002-2003 season, which was also the last time they made it into the playoffs. It's been very exciting to watch them come out and play. They look like a completely different team. You can feel the excitement from the players and the fans this year. So I was obviously on a hockey-related high all weekend.
Friday night I went out with some friends to our favorite neighborhood bar, Comet. They have brick oven pizzas, $2.50 PBR, which they serve right in the can, and ping pong. Better yet: FREE ping pong. When I first heard about it, I was like, sure you probably have "rent" a table for $25 an hour, or pay $15 for a ping pong. But they have three tables set up in the back of the restaurant, and you can just go and play. If all the tables are full, you wait your turn. It's all very civilized. And walking distance from my house!
Sunday I went for my weekly breakfast at Dad's house. My conversation with Isabella went something like this:
Me: Do you know what tomorrow is?
Isa: It's Dad's birthday! *clapclapclap*
Me: Do you know how old he is?
Isa: *confused look*
Me: He's going to be SIXTY!
Isa: WOW. He's going to be really……………..strong. AND his mustache is going to get really big and he's going to turn into a MONSTER!
Me: Oh no! We'll have to lock him in the basement!
Isa: Nah. Cause then he'll eat all my toys.
Later I asked her if she wanted to come to a hockey game with me this year and she goes, "No. I think I will get hurt." When I explained that she doesn’t have to PLAY hockey, she only has to WATCH hockey she agreed to come. But only if Isaac was going to be there. I really feel the love.
This week has been pretty boring. I've had no motivation to do my job. It's been a struggle to get anything done. It really sucks cause I have so much work to do right now I can't really afford to being staring off into space all the time. And I really feel like an ass because today I found out that I've been nominated for a Red Point Award. It's kind of tricky to explain, so bear with me.
Hanley Wood's motto is: Fast. Smart. Competitive. The company has developed this Awards thing as sort of a big motivational tool. Your boss or one of your co-workers nominates you if they feel that you embody one of these words. (There is a whole set of criteria for what each word means.) Then finalists are chosen; each finalist received $1000. I think there are like, 20 finalist or so. Then three winners are chosen, one for each word. The winners get $5000. EACH.
It's pretty insane. The whole thing came right out of left field. I had no idea that my boss was going to do this. In fact, an email went out explaining that next Tuesday the finalists are going to be announced. AND I DIDN'T GET IT. My boss had to be like, "Erin, you got that email because you are one of the nominees." Heh. Typical.
So I feel pretty good to even be nominated considering that the other people in my department that were nominated are my boss and my boss's boss. It also makes me feel really bad about slacking off at work this week. Oops.
Keep your fingers crossed for me and I'll let you know on Tuesday what happens.
