New York, New York -- it's a wonderful town! The fam and I are here for the rest of the week: me to go to BookExpo and FINALLY meet my editor and my agent; they to see the sights while Scholastic picks up the hotel bill.
We made it here (see what I did there?) late last night, having driven in to Buffalo on Monday evening to catch a Tuesday morning train. As far as the kids are concerned, Buffalo is paradise: the hotel looked out on the airport (exciting!) and had a nice pool (bliss!) and was next door to a McDondalds (ice cream!). We had a evening swim and then James fetched cones and we ate them in the Japanese-style courtyard, watching the airplanes and getting ice cream all over our suits. We threw pebbles at the koi. I'm sure they saw no reason to come to NYC.
But come we did. The train ride is beautiful, through the Hudson valley. It ran a little late: we got in at 8:30 instead of 6:30. The kids did well, considering they were mostly in a little box for eight hours.
When it got to New York, it turned out the car service Scholastic was sending to Penn Station was a stretch limo!!!! LORD, I am not important enough for a stretch limo. Vivian, who is the real world avatar of
Fancy Nancy, thought this was the bees knees. She is thrilled to be in the city -- and really, she is born to it. When she walks down the street with her Viviness full strength, she fits right in. She wants to see the "Statue of Liverty" and Central Park. Nora is a little overwhelmed and gets separation anxiety when I try to go to the bathroom by myself.
This morning, I think I shall catch a yellow cab to my business lunch. And then I'm off to BookExpo to see my editor, Arthur Levine, talk up Plain Kate as one of five featured books on the YA Editor's Buzz Panel. (To quote from the program, blushing: "original and ultimate taste-making event. Insightful and passionate, this intimate editorial exchange will provide you with an editor’s perspective on the Fall’s biggest potential breakout releases.")
I will touch Vivian for extra fabulousness.
