BTVS season 8 that darker?

On CDS forums someone said that: "I'm enjoying S8 so much and that's what's important. It's getting too dark and gray, even more than all of AtS' seasons. S6 is nothing compared to S8, so I can see why many fans can't take all that gray and darkness."

Now I haven't been following BTVS much outside of spoilers and few scans now and then. But from what I've seen it's mainly when jokes and the Scoobies being happy how their choices went until someone tells them off. Sure Xanders' girlfriend died, Buffy is using a girl that loves her, Willow is cheating on her girlfriend, etc but I don't see how this is more deep or darker than season 6. It's been how many issues of BTVS and has anyone owned up to their faults? Have they tried to set it right?

ATF has Angel trying to make up for his mistakes since issue one. All of L.A. is suffering. In fact most of the cast is dealing with their own personal demons or cruel punishments. Gwen can't touch anyone anymore, Wesley can't affect anything physically and still can't be with Fred, Connor had a near mental breakdown over his memories returning, and Gunn is the worst off of them all. I just can't see how BTVS can compare with that much less be so much darker than season 6. Maybe it reads like that all together?
