I have not taught a single class today but the day has been wonderful! Kyoto Sensei took the time to introduce me to the Shucho…Shucho Sensei…no idea which is the correct way to address him. He would be the section chief (no idea what he is the section chief of). Andrea, what is his job?
This introduction of course was done while Shucho was busy talking with someone else. I learned that Shucho likes to golf with Kocho Sensei and that he for some reason has two Hello Kitty dolls sitting on his desk. Kyoto Sensei did all of this with simple Japanese and a bunch of hand gestures I was highly entertained.
After this, Kocho Sensei realized I had not seen the pictures of the students’ trip to Superior from last year. They lead me out to the hall, showed me where the pictures were, and took the time to explain some of the pictures to me.
Just incase the terms are throwing you off here they are:
誇張先生 = Kocho Sensei = Principle
教頭先生 = Kyoto Sensei = Vice Principle
首長 = Shucho = Section Chief
Lunch today was fun. I ate in the teachers’ room and Kyoto Sensei was once again amusing. He told the librarian (a 22-year-old male) that because he was the youngest he should remember English and told him to talk to me in English. The librarian just looked at me and said, “I don’t speak English.” We talked in Japanese along with two other teachers. I found out that he is an awesome tennis player and coaches elementary school students a couple of days a week at 5:00pm. (He might coach one of my Friday night boys from interTalk.) We also talked about food and the school nurse informed me that also dislikes natto.
