The Glory of Persia

Yesterday, Hiromi and I went to Tokyo to see at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum. The exhibit was called The Glory of Persia, it contained over 200 pieces of art and stretched over 7,000 years. The exhibit was amazing; the pottery was really well preserved and I liked the set up of the museum. There was also some explanation of the history of Persia/Iran in English at the start of each new phase of history. It also helped that Hiromi explained some of the more fascinating historical information that had not been translated into English.

The highlight of the exhibit was a Gold Rhyton of a Winged Lion. Talk about a beautiful work of art. The detail of the carved gold was amazing and I went back to look at it three times. This was the piece of work depicted on all of the posters and I was amazed that I was lucky enough to see it.

Much of the work was pictures and bowls either in the shape of animals or carved to look like animals. It was fascinating display and I am glad I was able to see it before it left Tokyo. The show is going to be in Japan for a year and will be visiting five cities while it is here. It is on loan from a museum in Iran.

The next exhibit I want to see is entitled Shaping Faith: Japanese Ichiboku Buddhist Statues. It is at the Tokyo National Museum from October 3rd to December 3rd so I will have plenty of time to see it. There are also a couple of art shows going on at some of the other museums in the area so I a might hit those up in the near future.
