I'm now officially an LSU student for the semester (along with Rob), since Tulane will officially not being opening this fall. It's alright so far... besides the nightmare of registration. None of the classes I was going to take have something that corresponds being offered, so as of right now, I'll be taking Intermediate Classical Mechanics, Probability, a Scientific Computing class, and Nuclear Physics... I really wanted to take QM, but oh well. I couldn't register for any of the art classes yet, because I'm not technically an art major here, yet... I have to go talk to them tomorrow, and hopefully I'll find something to fit into my schedule. However, things aren't totally bad. My apartment is awesome... it's an on-campus apartment that I share with 3 other girls. It's so much nicer than what I had at Tulane... big kitchen, big rooms, our own washer & dryer... and my roommates are equally cool. We hung out with her and her boyfriend last night at his apartment. I might survive this semester, though I really hate natural disasters.
We're trying to find out how to volunteer for the Red Cross too... since the Red Cross isn't allowed in New Orleans right now, for some reason (thanks, Dept of Homeland Security), they're doing all their stuff in towns where evacuees went. Baton Rouge has doubled in population since the hurricane, so I'm sure they need a lot of help here... we just have to find out how to get involved. This whole hurricane is so ridiculously depressing. New Orleans is a 3rd world country right now, and New Orleans is doing well compared to the towns south of it where people haven't even begun to be rescued yet. It makes me absolutely sick how horribly the relief efforts are going. This is, without a doubt, a far greater tragedy than 9/11. More people died, and are still dying right now. Hundreds of thousands of people have nothing left. Their entire lives have been swept away in a giant flood, and now they're being treated like animals. I know there's only so much that can be done, but what the government is doing isn't even close to cutting it. George Bush didn't even decide to cancel his vacation until about 2 days after this happened. And he has to wait to the governor to request help before he sends it? And Louisiana has been asking for money to improve the levee system for years, and nothing ever makes it through Congress. It's just way too little too late, and my city will never be the same...
