Remember

Imagine the band girl won prom queen over the popular well rounded soccer star. Would the band nerds still be invisible to the entire school? Imagine the math team state champion shoving the football team into their own lockers then laughing about it, as if it were a daily occurrence. Would our school then even know that we even had a math team?

I remember a time when we were all friends, when we were never unkind or malicious to those now undetected and unobserved. I remember when that band geek and the varsity basketball champion shared their jelly beans with each other and told one other how they would be astronauts when they grew up and then argued on who would find the aliens first. A time when they used to split the last pickle in the jar, a time when they would play in the woods pretending to hunt elephants in the dense jungles of India. On hot summer nights when they spit in each others hand swearing that no matter what, they would be friends till they grew until they were eight hundred and ninety-two. But it always happens that way, they grow.

Growth, is the knife that cut the friendship in two, separating childhood and adolescence. The golden rule, is thrown out the window of a speeding car and run over by an eighteen wheeled tractor trailer. People once cared about, are replaced with sports, clubs, vacations, and new people.” Imagine”, a teacher once told me, “ and your dreams will become endless.” I dream of a time and place in which people get along with one another, where there is no “in” crowd, where people are not judged on their clothing or hair, where childhood memories and dreams are never forgotten only put in our back pocket, easily accessible for us to take out to remind ourselves that there are people in the world, other than ourselves, that we care about. What would be in your back pocket? Perhaps the memory of the time you hit the tree sledding and that band geek walked you all the way home while you cried because of a skinned knee. Or maybe was it the time that the two of you are sitting on your front porch laughing so hard that orange soda came out your nose.

Imagine that we never forget our promises. Imagine that friendship could stand the test of time. Would the reality of the math champion being put into the locker by the football team still hold true? Imagine actions that speak louder than words. Imagine that sticks and stones do break bones and words break peoples hearts. Imagine that we remember that which we have to chosen to be unseen.
