The past few days have had their ups and downs. Last Tuesday I went to a show in Boston. It was exciting to let loose and go out on a school night. The music was awesome, the venue was intimate yet substantial, and the company was excellent.
I rode that high into Wednesday when Zombie Kid struck again. No one was injured this time but it's difficult for me to observe and intervene these irrational physical and emotional outbursts. When a kid is on the spectrum, I get it. They can not communicate how they are feeling or what is going on in their bodies. I know the precursors, I can use all the "tools" I have to deescalate the situation or work towards a resolution. When a highly intelligent, fully verbal and communicative kid goes off I am at a loss. I understand now how people believe(d) in demon possession.
I used my health insurance for the first time. What cost me $450 two years ago was taken care of with a $5 co-pay. Thank you President Obama. Next week I am going in to discuss a smoking cessation program.
Oh yeah, I bought a car today. It's a 2012 Honda Civic EX. This will be the fourth Civic I've driven on a regular basis. When I first started driving, my mom's '93 turquoise coupe provided me such wonderful experiences as : not having a working speedometer/dash lights, the front bumper being held up with a binder clip, and of course the tire falling off in the drive through of Dunkin' Donuts. Last year, I drove my younger cousins '06 Civic. That car got me to and from numerous job interviews and aside from one incident while parallel parking it was a faithful ride. Since September I have been driving a '02 Civic that belongs to the family I work for. Their kindness allowed me to get to and from my many jobs and I am so grateful for the help that I have received.
My car is the product of innumerate hours of care. Most of my evenings and many of my weekends are devoted to non-verbal teen sitting, ABA programming, structured social outings, baby sitting and dog sitting. I love what I do and every time I drive my car I will remember all the laughs, learning opportunities, and life lessons that keep it funded.
