So I was going to do one post recounting my lovely birthday, the answers to my shipping meme and this mix, which was meant to be my birthday gift to you all, but LJ said the post was too big. So I'm posting the mix now and the rest in a bit. I have been sitting on this mix for I don't know how long and I figured I should finally share it. I'm not sure how I feel about the cover art, but it's all I could come up with the other night when I was dead tired. And I don't know that I could come up with anything better now, so...yeah.
Title: You Found Me
Subject: Songs reflecting Jack and Ianto's relationship from The Year That Never Was through Children of Earth
Warnings: Spoilers for Doctor Who season 3, Torchwood season 2, Children of Earth and some spoilers-ish for
d8rkmessngr's fic,
The Oncoming StormDisclaimer: I own no rights to Torchwood, any of the songs or to
d8rkmessngr's brilliant fic! (I really hope you don't mind me using it for inspiration!).
I can not think of Janto without thinking on that fic. If you haven't read it, I highly suggest it!
1. Come Back to Me by David Cook
It's always been my personal canon that Ianto understood Jack had to leave to find the Doctor and was confident he'd return. (Even though he was upset for Jack for the way he left.)
So I'll let you go
I'll set you free
And when you've seen
What you need to see
When you find you
Come back to me
2. Permanent by David Cook
I originally thought of this basically just as Ianto and Jack thinking of one another during the YTNW, but it also made me think of "The Oncoming Storm" when Jack and Ianto are temporarily reunited on the Valiant.
Is this the moment where
I look you in the eye?
Forgive my broken promise
that you`ll never see me cry
And everything
It will surely change
Even if I tell you I won`t go away today
Will you think that you`re all alone
When no one`s there to hold your hand?
And all you know seems so far away
And everything is temporary
Rest your head
I`m permanent
3. Ghost of Me by Daughtry
This is the second "Oncoming Storm"-ispired song. After time is reversed, Jack goes off with the Doctor to help him repair the TARDIS. Ianto and the others are left waiting to see if he'll return and Ianto dreams of having Jack back.
Thought it was dead and buried
Then it woke you up last night
You sounded so damn worried
You've been tossing, turning, both ends burning
I wanna put your mind at ease again
(Make everything alright)
I know it's getting underneath your skin
I've tried to tell you now
Don't look over your shoulder
'Cause that's just the ghost of me
You're seeing in your dreams
Wait, there's no rhyme or reason
Sometimes there's no meaning
In the visions when you're sleepin'
Don't wake up and believe them
You're looking at the ghost of me
4. I Know Him So Well from the musical "Chess," performed by John Barrowman and Daniel Boys
The moment I heard this rendition of this song (from JB's album "Music Music Music") I knew it was a Janto song. I think it demonstrates the shaky ground thei relationship is on during season two. They know they care, maybe even love, one another but are still afraid it's going to end. (When I listen to this version, I imagine John's part as Jack's thoughts and Daniel's part as Ianto's. Kind of convenient.)
Wasn't it good?
Wasn't he fine?
Isn't it madness
He won't be mine?
But in the end he needs a
Little bit more than me --
More security
He needs his
Fantasy and freedom
I know him so well
5. But For Now by Jamie Cullum
Jack's done is best to be better for Ianto, but he still has his secrets. Ianto wants to know them and as much as Jack wants to share them, he can't bring himself to do so.
Sure I know you’d like to have me
Talk about my future
And a million words or so to fill you in about my past
Have I sisters or a brother
When’s my birthday how’s my mother
Well my dear in time I’ll answer all those things you ask
But for now I’ll just say I love you
Nothing more seems important somehow
And tomorrow can wait come whatever
Let me love you forever but right now
Right now
6. That's All by Michael Buble
I always imagined Janto went dancing along with dinner on their first date. I heard this song and knew that if I ever wrote a fic about said date, this would be the song they danced to.
All I have are these arms to enfold you,
And a love time can never destroy.
If you're wondering what I'm asking in return, dear,
You'll be glad to know that my demands are small.
Say it's me that you'll adore,
For now and evermore
That's all
7. Just Some Guy by Anthony Rapp
I'm pretty sure this song will work with any male slash pairing that is prone to fluffy moments but this one also rang a bit more true for me in terms of Janto. I also find it more relevant from Jack's POV
And he's smiling like he means it
And he's stretched out on his back
And he's telling me now that he loves me
For the fifth or the sixth time, I can't keep track
And I watch his eyes as they shine
Run my fingers through his hair
And I touch his chest where his heart is
And I tell him I find safe haven there
8. Awake by Josh Groban
This is the Janto song for me. In fact, if anyone wants to make a fanvid with it, I will name my first born after you (or something equally dramatic). I'm going to include the entire song lyrics because it's just that perfect.
A beautiful and blinding morning
The world outside begins to breathe
See clouds arriving without warning
I need you here to shelter me
And I know that only time will tell us how
To carry on without each other
So keep me awake to memorize you
Give me more time to feel this way
We can't stay like this forever
But I can have you next to me today
If I could make these moments endless
If I could stop the winds of change
If we just keep our eyes wide open
Then everything would stay the same
And I know that only time will tell me how
We'll carry on without each other
So keep me awake for every moment
Give us more time to be this way
We can't stay like this forever
But I can have you next to me today
We'll let tomorrow wait, you're here, right now, with me
All my fears just fall away, when you are all I see
We can't stay like this forever
But I have you here today
And I will remember
Oh I will remember
Remember all the love we shared today
9. Come Rain or Come Shine by Sy Oliver, cover by Danny Gokey
For some reason I've always imagined this song as one that Jack and Ianto dance to at Martha's wedding. Because you know they went!
I'm gonna love you like nobody's loved you
Come rain or come shine
High as a mountain, deep as a river
Come rain or come shine
I guess when you met me it was just one of those things
But don't ever bet me cause I'm gonna be true
Well, if you let me
10. No Surprise by Daughtry
SPOILER FOR DAY FIVE OF COE.
Jack leaves Earth, broken by the death of Ianto. The whole song makes me think of Jack deciding to leave, but the following lyrics in particular:
It's no surprise I won't be here tomorrow
I can't believe that I stayed till today
There's nothing here in this heart left to borrow
There's nothing here in this soul left to save
11. Captain Jack's Theme
12. The Ballad of Ianto Jones
BONUS TRACKS
13. You Found Me by The Fray, cover by Matt Giraud
I first thought this song fit how broken Jack and Ianto were during Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, but the more I listened to it the more it made me think of the Doctor and Jack's relationship in Utopia/The Sound of Drums/The Last of the Time Lords
Where were you, when everything was falling apart.
All my days were spent by the telephone that never rang
And all I needed was a call that never came
To the corner of 1st and Amistad
Lost and insecure, you found me, you found me
Lying on the floor, surrounded, surrounded
Why'd you have to wait? Where were you? Where were you?
Just a little late, you found me, you found me.
And I've been calling for years and years and years
And you never left me no messages
You never sent me no letters
You got some kind of nerve taking all I want
14. How Did I End Up Here? from Keys: The Music of Scott Alan, performed by Norm Lewis
This was originally meant to reflect Jack's thoughts literally as he walks away from the Doctor and Martha at the end of The Last of the Time Lords. But, again, the more I listened to it the more I realized it reflected Ianto's frame of mind after "Cyberwoman." It's a gorgeous song. Again, I'm including the full lyrics.
How did I end up here,
this time in my life?
How does one lose everything
before it was given?
How did I end up here,
did I take the wrong direction?
How do i start to amend
these mistakes I've made
And all the mountains I must climb
And the oceans that I must swim through
And the walls that I must break
And the tears that must come down
And the sky that I must reach
And the strength I need to find
And the heart that I must stop
from closing in on me
leaves me here
How did I end up here?
Is there a road towards freedom?
And could I disappear
until the pain subsides?
Cause all the miles that I must walk to
And all the signs I must obey
And all bridges I must cross
And the courage I must gain
And the journey I must live
And the air that I must breathe
And the heart that I must stop
from closing in on me
leaves me here
Always here
Just here
Right here
DOWNLOAD(If you have any problems with the songs, just let me know and I will upload them individually.)
I also feel like I can't leave this post without mentioning the heartbreaking CoE video that I'm pretty sure someone posted on
jackxianto but I watch on YouTube all the time. It was made using only clips from CoE and Ianto's speech from "The Dead Line" by a person who has only seen CoE. And yet I consider this the best Janto fan video I've ever seen and you all must see it if you haven't already!
