Gabriel surrounded himself with books. He sat cross-legged in the center of his apartment, a parameter of many different old books around him in a circle and a steaming mug of earl grey in his hands. One of his customers had requested a custom piece, unlike anything he currently had in stock in the cases of his shop.
This customer was buying the piece for someone special to them. Gabriel didn’t pry into their affairs, but he could tell. He just knew. For someone to go to such lengths to buy an original type of timepiece from when pocket watches were in their early designs, the recipient had to be special.
His three oldest books, that he thought would have the best chance of finding information in, belonged to Martin. Right after Martin had deserted him and Virginia, Virginia saw it fit to attempt to remove all of Martin’s watch making tools and books for the protection of Gabriel. Gabriel was too good for the profession of a man who couldn’t be bothered to take care of his family.
Gabriel learned the next day that Virginia had taken everything over to the nearby thrift store. Gabriel ran to the store and immediately bought up all of the watch making items and books at a price far below their actual worth. Watch making was in Gabriel. It was part of his breeding and he could not let his mother just throw it all away.
Sipping the tea a few times, Gabriel finally found the letter about the piece that he was looking for - it was a pocket watch made by the Italian watchmaker, Bartholomew Manfredi, in the 1400s. The details were sketchy at best for the schematics of the watch, but Gabriel was confident that he could fulfill his customer’s wishes satisfactorily.
