Back when the "Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy" came out, I was talking to a coworker about knit and crochet stuff. Anyhow, the coworker mentioned that she had seen a music video made with knitted toys, etc. at a short film festival but couldn't remember what the band was or the name of the song ( Read more... )

Hi there,

Yes I did take PHLB03 at UTSC in 2009. I no longer have the syllabus, unfortunately.

The readings were from a custom reader available from the bookstore, as well as "The Philosophy of Art: Readings Ancient and Modern" edited by Neill and Ridley. I found the amount of reading to be fairly light for a philosophy class, though the more abstract concepts sometimes required me re-read the material several times.

Off the top of my head, some of the topics we explored were:
-What is "art"? Formalism/traditionalism vs the aesthetic hypothesis
-Wittgenstein's aesthetics
-Kant's aesthetics
-Art in the age of mechanical reproduction
-The role of the art museum

There were two essays and a final exam. I do not remember how much each was worth, but I'm guessing it was something like Essay #1=25%, Essay #2=35%, Final Exam =40%.

Please note that the material for this course is probably different from the Aesthetics course offered at UTSG (downtown campus).

By the way, I think there is a now a Philosophy Student's Association at UTSC. You may want to get in touch with them to see if someone there has a syllabus.

I hope this helps you! I thought it was a great course and I highly recommend it. I also took PHLC03 with Stokes.
