So, last month, I found out that a manuscript I submitted for publication as an article (based on my much longer MA thesis) was accepted for publication in a journal, pending revisions. That was good news - means all the work I put in to my MA thesis will not go to waste, and I can finally add a publication to my ever-expanding CV. The journal, the
"Southern Historian" isn't that big of a deal - it's a graduate student journal (meaning all the writing, editing, and publishing is done by graduate students) out of the University of Alabama, but it's still nice to have the MA thesis published. Otherwise, I probably would have had to put a lot more work in to revising it for publication in another journal, and I just don't have the time for that while trying to finish up my dissertation in the next year.
I got the edited manuscripts back from the journal, cranked out some revisions, and sent them off last week, in the hopes that I'd be good to go.
Well, I got an email back from the editors today saying that the article is good to go, minus a few grammar and typo corrections. But that's not even the good news. Even better is that apparently they offer an award each year called the Sommersell Prize for the best article submitted. I didn't even know this award existed. And I guess my article won the award which also carries a stipend of $250. Outstanding.
And that wasn't even the best news today.
I also got word that I've been awarded a one-month fellowship to go out to Los Angeles for dissertation research at the Huntington Library. The financial part is ok - $2000, barely enough to survive for a month in LA - but it's an extremely prestigious fellowship, so that's exciting. Really exciting. I feel smart again.
Carrie got some long-awaited sandals today, and I also got some "Senior Day headbands" in the mail too. All in all a fantastic day.
Plus, it's March, selection Sunday and the NCAA Tourney are just mere days away, my birthday is roughly 2 weeks away, and Spring is almost here.
Brilliant.
