alrighty, time for a text based update.
So things are settling down and school starts on monday so this is the last little while of free time before the cloud over my head will arrive. After much toil and messiness, I am NOT taking a single food science class because a) I had to ask for special permission to get in them since they are part of a 4-year technology degree that doesn't normally admit people part way through, and b) even after all that, they didn't fit into a schedule that didn't conflict with other classes so I just gave up on it altogether. Instead, I'm getting to know my asian roots through a Chinese Culture class and a Chinese Film class, and I'm also taking a New Zealand history class as well as a random psychology class. Not my initial intention for coming here, but I think it will be fun nonetheless. Just have to get used to lots of reading instead of lab reports.
This week is officially dubbed O-week at Massey University since its orientation time for all the new students. What this means is lots of drinking and free stuff sponsored by various bars, clubs, the school itself, and general all-around craziness. All the freshmen are going crazy at the prospect of being away from home and drinking themselves silly so its rather busy around here. Last night we went out to town (where all the action is) on the free campus shuttle bus but after we got there, realized that one of our group had forgotten to bring ID, so some of us came back and we hung out at a dorm party for a while. There, someone proceeded to have their eyebrows shaved off, which was quite interesting, but the party was broken up soon after. I wonder how he's feeling this morning.
I suppose I should elaborate on this cryptic "we" phrase I have been using. Basically, since all the international students arrived before the other Kiwi students, we all got to know each other and have become a bit of a social unit. I have been hanging around with mostly nerdy guys (surprise surprise) but there are other girls here and there as well. A friend from my Butler orientation, Ben, has a friend from high school here, Brandt, so I see them quite often. I also have been seeing a bit of J, a guy who lives in my hall, as well as Rodrigo, a fellow from Cali, and Joe, a British guy. Add water, stir, and you get my current group. They're all great, but I think we are getting antsy about the fact that we're in NZ and not befriending as many Kiwis as we would like. I'm hoping/thinking that will change once school starts.
I think thats about as much text as one can handle at a sitting, so that's all for now. I have been here long enough though, that I don't really know what fascinating details I'm leaving out so if anyone reads this (ha!) remind me what I have yet to write about.
