To kick-start the revival I'm going to post the daily plan I wrote a while ago for a course I taught to absolute beginners without using a course book. I'll update regularly (twice or three times a week), each update with a lesson plan follwoing a cronological order. Starting with day one.
First Class:
- First, wave and say 'hello' to the students and have them repeat it. Say it again, louder, if they are too shy.
- Introduce the course, the new language, the learning process and method in their native language.
- Talk about yourself in the native language and bond with the students.
- Have the students bond and chat with each other. Games and simple warm ups are very effective for this.
- Find out the reason they want to learn English and formulate a plan of action directing lessons and examples towards their goal. You will need to do that after this class, and before the next.
- Introduce basic classroom expressions using gestures, flashcards, drawing on the board, or taking them for a spin around the school (for example, have them repeat "May I go to the restroom?" then take the students out of class, and introduce the restroom). Use native language only as a last resource.
- Have the students practice the expressions and use them with each other.
